If you had any doubts about Audi keeping its iconic Allroad alive, you can definitely put those to rest now. The Ingolstadt-based automaker just revealed its next-gen model, and it’s as awesome as it looks.

Audi recently launched its sixth-generation midsize sedan and wagon. So, it was only natural for the carmaker to follow-up with its specialized variants.

In the niche world of wagons, particularly lifted ones, there’s a running joke surrounding the Allroad, which also happens to bear some truth to it. It’s basically the fancier upgrade for Subaru Outback fans.

That’s because, just like the Outback, the Allroad is essentially a higher-riding and more rugged version of its standard model. And because the Audi is, well, a premium brand, it’s one big step above a Subaru.

Just like the soon-to-be outgoing A6 Allroad, the new model rides on the same bones as the regular A6. That would be Volkswagen Group’s latest Premium Platform Combustion modular chassis, or PPC. It’s also the same structure underpinning the latest Q5 and A5 models.

Keeping with tradition

In classic Allroad fashion, the wagon boasts more ground clearance than the standard Avant. But, helping to keep things flexible is Audi’s traditional use of air suspension, which allows for an adjustable height range of just over two inches.

Up front sits Audi’s latest gas-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain as well as an optional turbodiesel V6. At the heart of the hybrid system is Volkswagen Group’s ubiquitous 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder.

But because of the hybrid powertrain, the latest model earns the distinction as the world’s first hybrid-powered A6 Allroad. With the electric motor, the powertrain produces a total system output of around 365 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque.

The result is a 0-62 mph sprint in just 4.4 seconds. When charged up, the A6 Allroad PHEV can also travel up to roughly 60 miles on all-electric power. Audi did not have US-spec fuel economy ratings available.

Although we’ll likely be missing out on the diesel, it’s still good for around 295 horsepower and 428 pound-feet, and a 0-62 mph time of less than six seconds.

The big reward for the diesel, however is outstanding fuel economy. Audi claims the new A6 Allroad can achieve the equivalent of up to 37 to 41 miles per gallon on the European testing cycle.

It’s definitely coming to America

Although Audi AG revealed the model for Europe and didn’t share any specifics about the North American market, an Audi USA spokesperson told our friends at Motor1 that the A6 Allroad is US-bound.

Audi still sells the previous A6 Allroad and it’s been a staple of automaker’s model range here in America since, well, the brand introduced it in 1999.

When it does cross the pond, it’ll likely come strictly with the plug-in hybrid powertrain. Because, well, the last time any of Volkswagen’s brands tried to pitch diesels here in America, it didn’t quite exactly go well for them.

Nonetheless, we’re still excited to see a new Allroad, and we’re even more excited to see it come to America.
