Luminox is undoubtedly best known for its dive watches. After all, the brand famously has a longstanding partnership with Iceland’s Search and Rescue teams, for whom dive watches are an operational necessity.

However, the brand also has a healthy catalog beyond ocean-going timepieces. In fact, one of its best is a bit of a land lubber, so to speak. And now it has gotten a special edition, the Luminox Atacama Field Year of the Horse, which may go down as the best-looking one ever.

One of the best parts of this watch, as opposed to other Zodiac-inspired products, is its subtlety.

Stone-cold stunner

As the watch’s name suggests, this special edition is designed to celebrate the 2026 Chinese Year of the Horse. However, unlike other brands’ Zodiac-themed offerings, this one is far subtler — a boon for fans of the watch and lovers of good design.

In fact, the only hint of the watch’s theme is found on the dial. Instead of a traditional Arabic numeral, the 7 o’clock icon has been swapped for a gold-toned horse icon. (For reference, that icon also makes an appearance on the engraved caseback.)

The 7 on the dial has been swapped for a horse icon, which is eye-catching without being ostentatious.

The gold-toned motif extends to other parts of the watch, as well. The 24-hour markers, arrow beside the date window and the brand logo on the dial are all similarly colored, as is the watch’s crown and the stitching on one of the two included fabric bands (the other is solid red). However, the hands are more of a classic field tan.

The rest of the dial — including the 12-hour numerals and the water-resistance denotation — and the case are blacked out, allowing the gold (and tan) to stand out even more. While the brand has employed similar color combinations before, this particular arrangement is special and, in my opinion, represents the best this watch has ever looked.

As expected, the hands and hour markers are equipped with Luminox’s signature 25-year lume.

The cavalry has arrived

Good looks are cool and groovy, but they don’t mean much if the rest of the watch doesn’t back them up. Thankfully, the Atacama is already a very proven offering. And this version is operationally identical to its siblings.

That means it has a Ronda 515 Swiss quartz movement housed within its case, offering exceptional reliability and accuracy. And the case housing it is the brand’s signature Carbonox material — an ultralight, ultra-tough carbon-based substance.

Another signature Luminox element is the dial’s lume. The hands and hour markers both have lume designed to last for a whopping 25 years, and they require no “charging” to function.

Other elements include an antireflective sapphire crystal and, as mentioned, a pair of straps: an NBR strap with black textile and gold stitching and a red webbing strap.

Since this is a special edition, however, only 600 examples have been made, and the brand has no plans to replenish its stock once they sell out.

This could very well be the best-looking Atacama yet.
