This Little-Known, Ultra-Affordable Seiko Is Bursting with Rolex Explorer Vibes

The only thing better than the dial is the price.

Back in 2019, Japanese watch retailer TicTac collaborated with Seiko to celebrate the store’s 35th anniversary. The pair designed a special-edition watch that blended Seiko’s Alpinist with dial elements from the iconic Rolex Explorer.

The blend of cathedral hands and an extremely clean dial, with hour numerals at only 12:00 and 6:00, was a refreshing look that played to mid-century vintage watch enthusiasts. However, since it was a limited-edition exclusive to the Japanese market, it flew under the radar.

In 2025, TicTac and Seiko quietly released two new references in their collaboration model.

Some Seiko fanatics and collectors are aware of the original TicTac collaboration model, reference SZSB006, with a matte black dial sporting a creamy yellow printed hour track, including the 6 and 12, and hand inlays modeled after the Explorer I. But the three additional 35th-anniversary models, released later in 2019, are less well known.

There is another variation of the Seiko x TicTac watch, more influenced by the modern version of Rolex’s Explorer I, featuring metallic applied hour markers and numerals, presented in a slightly different font. It has a sunburst dial, available in navy blue, silver and green-blue with a gilded seconds hand.

In 2024, the vintage-inspired design was revived for TicTac’s 40th anniversary. The reference SZSB032 was almost an inverse of the original SZSB006, with a creamy white dial featuring a black seconds track, black framed printed hour markers, black printed numerals and the Alpinist handset coated in matte black.

Then, recently in 2025, for seemingly no particular reason, the collaborators breathed new life into this unique design by sneakily releasing two more references. The new SZSB036 reproduces the blue-green dial of 2019’s SZSB028 and the SZSB035 does the same for the old silver SZSB007.

The only difference is that the new versions come on steel three-link bracelets rather than the original leather straps, further amping up the Explorer vibes.

Happy anniversary!

With that history out of the way, let’s dig into what makes the Seiko x TicTac anniversary model one of the Japanese watchmaker’s best affordable designs.

To begin with, it is a rare appearance of the Alpinist cathedral hands outside of the Alpinist collection. When placed atop a clean dial like this, it gives a classical dress watch vibe.

What really calls to most watch fans is the resemblance to the Explorer. The designers clearly set out to blend Seiko’s iconic mountaineering watch with Rolex’s genre-defining model. There is no shortage of Explorer homage watches, but Seiko applies enough of its own design language to avoid dupe territory.

The 40mm stainless steel case matches modern Explorer dimensions, although it would likely be my all-time favorite Seiko if it were sized closer to the more traditional 36mm Explorer.

If there is one shortcoming of the TicTac anniversary watch, it is the movement. Seiko opted for its entry-level 4R35 movement, which is an automatic featuring hand-winding and has a mediocre 41-hour power reserve.

It would be nice to see the more robust 6R35, which is found throughout the Alpinist collection, as it’s an all-around superior movement with a 70-hour power reserve.

Despite the modest movement, the watch still has a Hardlex exhibition caseback.

Availability and price

As mentioned, the Seiko x TicTac anniversary collection is sold only in Japan, but that doesn’t mean it’s hard to acquire. The original four references have been around long enough that they are easy to find on the resale market.

Search SZSB006 for the original black dial or SZSB032 for the cream dial on any resale site, and you’ll find what you’re looking for. Thanks to the surprise drop last year, the silver dial and green-blue dial that emulate the modern Explorer are still available new from TicTac.

TicTac now uses a global shipping service called Worldshopping, which means Americans can buy directly from the Japanese watch shop. It’s a little more complex than buying from a domestic site because a second payment for international shipping is required after the purchase, but given the Yen’s exchange rate, it’s still a great deal.

TicTac is selling its newest Seiko collaboration models for ¥55,000, which currently exchanges for $347. That is a fantastic deal for one of the best-looking watches that Seiko has produced this century.
