Is This Casio’s Most Rugged Non-G-Shock Watch Yet?

Tough enough.

When I think of tough Casio watches, I think G-Shock. But, to quote the great philosopher Yoda, “There is another.”

Pro Trek is basically Casio’s G-Shock-lite line. Pro Trek watches, like G-Shocks, are engineered for outdoor adventures and share many of the same features, with the main difference between them often coming down to Pro Trek’s lack of G-Shock’s trademark shock-resistant case construction. However, this also means that Pro Trek watches tend to be thinner and more wearable than their shock-resistant cousins, so it all depends on your priorities.

Casio has just unveiled a new Pro Trek model in collaboration with White Mountaineering, an outdoor-inspired streetwear label from Casio’s home country of Japan. Not only does the watch look great with its urban aesthetic, but it also ranks as one of the toughest non-G-Shock Casio watches I’ve seen.

Just add titanium

This is the second collab between Pro Trek and White Mountaineering, with the previous effort being part of the more basic PRJ-B001 Series. The new watch belongs to Pro Trek’s high-spec PRW-B1000 line and is virtually a G-SHOCK in all but name.

Like the previous White Mountaineering collab, this watch — Ref. PRW-B1000WM-1 — has been given an aesthetic overhaul in line with the fashion brand’s outdoorsy, street-ready style. It’s virtually all black and gray, with white luminescent hands and hour markers and a couple of red accents on the dial. White Mountaineering’s repeating triangle pattern is featured both on the dial and the steel bezel.

The other big change is the bracelet. The PRW-B1000’s usual rubber strap has been replaced by a tougher, matte-black titanium H-link bracelet with a sliding adjustable clasp. This marks the first time we’ve seen such a bracelet in this series, and the watch looks a lot more rugged for it.

The colorway, triangle pattern, White Mountaineering branding on the dial and caseback and, most notably, the bracelet, are really the only changes here — though they are quite significant.

Otherwise, the watch remains pretty much the same as before, with a sapphire crystal and power courtesy of the Casio Cal. 5741 movement, which is loaded with every feature you’d expect to see in a high-end G-Shock.

That includes Tough Solar quartz, Multi-band 6 radio control and Bluetooth connectivity, essentially giving you three ways to keep this watch dead-accurate regardless of your environment. Speaking of your environment, the watch is water-resistant to 100m, the bio-based resin case is flame-retardant and the movement is low-temperature-resistant to 14℉.

The movement also has virtually every watch complication you could possibly need, including a world timer, chronograph, perpetual calendar, timer, alarm and more. It also boasts several outdoor-specific features, a calling card of Pro Trek watches. These include a compass, altimeter, barometer and even a thermometer.

What’s more, the dial, in my humble opinion, is more attractive than most G-Shocks. The two analog subdials, both of which have multiple functions, are symmetrical and make the watch look more like a traditional chronograph. The digital screen is also symmetrical, not off-center like on most G-Shocks, and its horizontal placement at 6:00 brings to mind classic, old-school, tough ana-digi watches like the Seiko “Arnie” and Breitling Aerospace.

Availability and pricing

Casio Pro Trek has really stepped up its game with this collab. Not only does it look great, but the addition of the titanium bracelet really transforms this watch into a G-Shock rival that’s just as capable on the trails as on the streets.

While the previous White Mountaineering collab is sold out, Casio has not labeled this new watch a limited edition, so hopefully that means it will stick around for a while. The brand also has not yet revealed the price tag, but with the model slated to go on sale later this month, I imagine that omission will be rectified soon.
