Being the first Ducati dirt bike and therefore the only one in the segment to feature the brand’s special Desmodromic valves, the Desmo450 MX (and its EDX sibling) is already one uniquely cool motorcycle.

And here’s the thing — if the standard model isn’t enough to impress, the Borgo Panigale-based manufacturer has since one-upped it with a race-ready Factory version. Between an eye-catching Ducati Corse livery and some choice suspension and exhaust upgrades, it brings even more heat to an already potent package.

Nevertheless, as cool as these exotic off-road singles are, I’d argue that neither compare to what Ducati is currently cooking up for its Desmo450 family. There’s another version slated to debut this summer, and it’s set to be even more versatile.

A new challenger approaches

It’s called the EDS, and it’s a street-legal model that Ducati previewed last November at EICMA. Though the brand offered little in the way of information at the time, the promise of a road-going Italian enduro was more than enough to stoke riders’ excitement.

But now there’s been an update. Recently leaked European design registrations are offering a glimpse of some changes that’ll appear on the production version, as discovered by AMCN.

At first glance, it’s all pretty expected stuff. Beyond the headlight and taillight from the EICMA concept, the forthcoming Desmo450 EDS will sport further requisite street-ready accouterments like mirrors on the bars, front and rear turn signals and, of course, a license plate mount.

Take a closer look, however, and you’ll see that it’s more than a mere lighting job. For instance, the EDS’s exhaust is pictured with a longer header pipe, a catalytic converter and various other emissions equipment.

The concept notably lacked a display, which the street-legal version will obviously feature so riders can keep a read on their speed.

Elsewhere, you’ll find further tweaks. In addition to a heel guard behind the right footpeg to protect the rear brake master, there are now some chain guards fitted atop the front sprocket and swingarm.

Looking to the rest of the lineup

While you can’t know for certain how the pictured differences in the exhaust equipment will affect the EDS’s performance, Ducati’s current models at least offer an idea of what to expect.

Being a part of the Desmo450 family, the new bike will take its power from a 449.6cc single. As found in the MX and the EDX, the mill is good for 63.5 horsepower and 39.5 lb-ft of torque, so output is likely to be similar in road-going application.

Moreover, because the EDS borrows much of its design from the enduro-focused EDX model, it would follow that it should also feature its 18-inch rear wheel, larger fuel tank, and Showa suspension. With the added compliance equipment, the EDS may tip the scales slightly heavier, so it’ll probably be sprung slightly differently.

In any event, seeing as the Desmo450 MX and EDX already feature some trick electronics, the addition of a dedicated display on the EDS is only likely to enable further hooliganism.

After all, along with launch control, engine brake control and multiple riding modes, they each tout Ducati Traction Control, which measures rear wheel slip and switches off mid-air for smooth jumps and landings.

As the EDS will be a road-going bike, you can expect additional cooling provisions and, hopefully, longer service intervals.

Summer-bod ready

The Desmo450 EDS is slated for release this summer, so Ducati is bound to be dropping more details soon. As a bike that promises to bring the Desmo450 MX’s ground-breaking powertrain to the road (while still maintaining its trail capabilities), it’s an offering that’s set to prove just how versatile the cool Italian single can be.

As a rider with a penchant for hypotheticals, I can’t help but get excited about the idea of someone taking one of these and turning it into a slick supermoto.
