In the rich history of heirloom folding knives, the Buck 110 Folding Hunter stands as perhaps the single most important one ever, at least in American History.

Yet this knife is still relevant to this day, despite being introduced over 60 years ago. Perhaps that’s because, in addition to its timeless design, the brand continues to iterate and expand upon it.

As proof positive of that, the brand has just launched the Buck Knives Carbon Fiber 110 Auto Elite Stealth Run #13, a magnificently contemporary take on this exceptional cutting tool.

Welcome to Reference Points: A series about the products that changed the standard — and never really stopped influencing it. Discover more here.

The heritage-to-contemporary pipeline

The Buck 110 Folding Hunter is one of those knives so near-perfect in its design that it really needs no tweaks. Even if you have gripes with it, its iconic nature quashes most criticisms, as making any alterations would bastardize what is undoubtedly one of the most instantly recognizable folding blades.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with a bit of newness where appropriate, and I don’t think anyone is beholden to the knife’s original materials (and even if they are, they can still have them in other versions). It’s the material swaps that largely make this particular version so special.

As is common with 110 Folding Hunters, this one lacks a pocket clip.

Yes, this is still a 110 Folding Hunter through and through, but it gets a much more contemporary blade. This drop-point take utilizes BOS heat-treated MagnaCut steel, perhaps the best all-around blade steel of the moment — a super steel that defies historic conventions, offering an exceptional blend of performance, durability and so much more.

To mate with that steel, the handle scales have similarly been exchanged. Instead of ebony (Crelicam), this knife gets marbled carbon fiber that is stunning to behold, incredibly tough and strong, and pretty unique for Buck in general. And yet, that’s not all …

Yes, that is, in fact, a MagnaCut 3.75-inch blade.

Flipping out

It’s worth noting that the contemporary material swaps aren’t the only thing that makes this knife a bit different. It also has a mechanism that, while not actually new to the model, remains more modern and unusual.

This is not a manual knife. Rather, it has a button-actuated automatic deployment. That little shield-shaped protrusion on the presentation side of the handle, when depressed, springs the blade into position, making this an even speedier, more convenient take on a classic knife.

It’s the material swaps that largely make this particular version [of the Buck 110 Folding Hunter] so special.

And yet, it is bookended by an element the Folding Hunter has employed since its inception: a classic back lock. Found down toward the butt of the handle, this lock is an integral part of the knife’s history and operation, and it’s nice to see the new blended with the old in more ways than one.

The knife also retains its size specs, as mentioned, including a 3.75-inch blade, although it is a drop point instead of a classic clip point. Altogether, there’s a lot to love here, both for traditionalists and lovers of contemporary innovation alike.

The marbled carbon fiber handle scales fit right in, despite being highly unusual for this knife model.
