It feels like integrated sports watches, modeled after the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus, went from niche interest to hotly contested market overnight. To the benefit of watch fans everywhere, that elevated competition has produced more affordable options than ever before.

Indie brands like Christopher Ward and Nivada spearheaded the recent revival, but an excellent example that most people sleep on comes from one of the biggest brands in the business.

Citizen’s Series8 collection contains a variety of angular integrated case designs, including a diver and a GMT, but the standard time-and-date model just got an update that pushes it closer to the top of the crowded affordable integrated sports watch market.

The new Series8 case has a tiered design, presenting far more angles, and trimming off one millimeter in height and diameter, coming in at 39mm wide and 10mm tall.

However, the downsizing is more dramatic than those numbers suggest, as the fixed bezel has grown and the midcase is approximately half the height of the previous time-and-date model.

With the addition of an elongated bezel guard that doesn’t protrude as much, the redesign is decidedly sleeker and smoother, despite the increased number of angles.

Seeing all the angles

Citizen’s new Series8 case looks like it was carved out of the previous version, creating a middle tier between the round bezel and faceted midcase. This new layer has an octagonal shape, multiplying the geometric depth of the design.

The basic shape of the midcase remains the same, but it is flattened out to lighten the impression on the wrist. A new crown guard is the same length as the bezel, where it used to fit between 2:00 and 4:00, further stretching the appearance.

One of the most notable updates is that, unlike the previous time-and-date design, which had endlinks that made the bracelet look integrated when it could actually be removed, this new design is genuinely integrated. It comes on the same H-link steel bracelet found throughout the collection.

The dial, on the other hand, is not new. It features the same basketweave texture found throughout the Series8 collection, and uses the typical applied baton indices with double markers at the cardinal points.

There is a slightly different shape to the obelisk hour and minute hands, but it is barely noticeable, and they possess the same lume inserts. A framed date window still lives at 3:00, adjoining a cropped double index.

One more holdover from the previous generation is the Citizen Caliber 9051 automatic movement, which beats at 4Hz, provides a 42-hour power reserve and is accurate to -10/+20 seconds per day.

Availability and pricing

The new Series8 case debuts with three regular production models. There is a full gold-plated reference with contrasting yellow and rose gold tones, a two-tone reference with a white dial and a full steel reference with a green dial.

Those three are joined by a 1,200-piece limited-edition reference featuring a forged carbon dial plate with a swirling charcoal texture. It has gold-toned hands and hour markers, and a two-tone case blending gold plating and a dark gray brushed steel finish.

At the time of writing, only the gold reference is available on Citizen’s American website, but the remaining options are promised in March 2026, so they should be available any day now.

The full gold goes for $1,295, meaning that the remaining regular production references should cost a bit less, and the limited edition a bit more.
