This past fall, Quad introduced a new flagship range of hi-fi components, which it named the Platina Series.

At launch, the range consisted of two components, a high-end integrated amplifier named the Platina Integrated ($5,495), as well as a network player named the Platina Stream ($4,495). Both, as you can tell from their prices, are designed for pretty serious audiophiles.

Now, the famed British hi-fi manufacturer is adding a third component to its Platina Series. And it’s specifically designed for those who want to add CD playback capabilities to their hi-fi system.

A flagship CD transport

The Quad Platina CDT is a high-end CD transport designed to match the look, footprint and playback capabilities of the company’s existing Platina Series components.

In combination with the Platina Integrated and Platina Stream, Quad claims that the Platina CDT helps form “a cohesive platform for modern high-fidelity playback [that unites] physical media, streaming and amplification within a consistent architectural and sonic framework.”

As its name suggests, the Platina CDT is a CD transport only, meaning it handles the CD mechanism and CD playback and requires a separate DAC. This is unlike traditional CD players, which have a built-in DAC.

By not focusing on the digital-to-analog conversion, it can focus entirely on reading the CD, optimizing accurate playback and audio quality. (This is why CD transports are considered more “audiophile grade” than standalone CD players.)

Advanced tech, accurate playback

Naturally, Quad engineered the Platina CDT with advanced technologies to ensure it’s worthy of such audiophiles.

It features a custom-developed transport mechanism that delivers smooth, accurate playback. There’s an ultra-precise master clock with a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), which actively monitors and compensates for temperature changes in real time.

This results, according to Quad, in a presentation that’s “characterized by focus, control and clarity, with improved spatial definition and natural tonal balance.”

The Platina CDT is capable of playing traditional audio CDs, as well as higher-performing CD-R, CD-RW, and data CD formats.

Additionally, there’s a USB port on the back of the Platina CDT that accepts stored hard drives, allowing you to play other digital music files. Quad says that it supports a wide range of formats, including FLAC, WAV, MP3, AAC, WMA and APE.

Availability and pricing

Just like the other components in its Platina Series, Quad offers the Platina CDT in two different finishes: black or silver.

It’s priced at £1,499 (or roughly $1,999) and is expected to start shipping next month, in April 2026.
