Shinola’s New Hotel Is Worth the Trip to Detroit

Now open in Detroit, the new hotel looks exactly like a hotel Shinola would open, and that’s a very good thing.

For years, Shinola has led Detroit’s well-documented revival, and the company just furthered its hometown commitment. The Shinola Hotel, which it calls “Detroit’s living room,” is now open.

Shinola chose five early 20th century buildings in Downtown Detroit to build out its first hotel, a space that features 129 bookable rooms and several food and drink spots. Planned retail outlets include Le Labo, Madewell and a handful of local brands from Detroit.

Gachot Studios and Kraemer Design Group handled the interior design work — a job that included creating 50 unique configurations for close to a dozen room booking options, multiple restaurants and a handful of lounge areas. The lobbies and communal spaces pair muted furniture with bright artwork, while attentive guests will notice nods to local history.

Unsurprisingly, the hotel shows off a bounty of Shinola products, some of which are exclusive to the hotel — the Runwell Desk Clock, a striped alpaca throw blanket and a signature hotel candle, to name a few.

The hotel’s five food and drink spots are helmed by one Andrew Carmellini, a chef whose résumé includes stints at multiple Michelin-starred restaurants (plenty of James Beard nods, too). Options include the Evening Bar, which specializes in craft cocktails; the Brakeman, a beer hall that highlights beer from the Midwest; and Penny Red’s, where the main attraction is fried chicken.

Room options range from a simple two-person, queen bed setup to 1,100-square-foot penthouses outfitted with a curated vinyl collection (and Shinola’s own audiofile-grade turntable and Bluetooth speakers).

The Shinola Hotel started taking room reservations earlier this year. Depending on what days you book, prices start at $195 per night.
