Astell&Kern has introduced the AK HC5, a new USB DAC/amp that’s designed to boost the audio quality of your wired headphones when plugged into a laptop, smartphone or handheld console, like a Switch 2.

Of course, the market is saturated with USB-C DAC/amps these days, but given that it’s made by Astell&Kern, arguably the biggest name in premium portable hi-fi, the AK HC5 is nicer than most.

A new benchmark for USB DACs

By name, the AK HC5 is a new-and-improved version of the company’s previous USB DAC/amp, the AK HC4, which was released in late 2023. But Astell&Kern has rung in the changes and the two look nothing alike.

The two share a premium build with a body made out of solid aluminum, but the AK HC5 actually has a screen — a 1.62-inch OLED display — that shows current settings and playback information.

Also new, the AK HC5 actually has on-device tactile controls, headlined by a 150-step volume wheel for precise volume adjustments. According to the brand, it uses the same encoder system found in Astell&Kern’s extremely high-end portable hi-fi players.

But it’s not just the looks that are new. Astell&Kern has overhauled the internals of the AK HC5 so that it’s able to deliver flagship-grade audio quality in an ultra-portable form factor.

Borrowed hi-fi features

It features the AK4499EX DAC — which is the same DAC found in Astell&Kern’s top-tier portable hi-fi players, including the $4,290 SP4000— and pairs it with an AK4191EQ digital processor.

According to the brand, this combination allows the AK HC5 to “perfectly separate digital and analog stages, minimizing noise and revealing extraordinary detail.”

The AK HC5 uses a horizontally arranged Op-Amp architecture that supports High Driving Mode, an advanced amplification feature borrowed from the brand’s SP4000 player, resulting in tracks that sound more dynamic.

Additionally, the DAC offers DAR (digital audio remastering) upsampling, supporting high-resolution audio up to PCM 384 kHz and DSD256. And there are six DAC filters to choose from, allowing users to fine-tune the sound.

Price and availability

Naturally, all these improvements come at a pretty steep price. While the AK HC4 was priced at around $240 (and still is), the AK HC5 adds more than $200 to that — it costs $450.

The AK HC5 will be available starting in January 2026.
