Just a few months ago, Audio-Technica released its new R-Series of open-back headphones designed as an entry point for musicians and budding audiophiles. The three models in series range from $99 to $350.

Now, the famed Japanese audio manufacturer is targeting the other end of the hi-fi spectrum by introducing its most advanced pair of open-back headphones yet.

The Audio-Technica ATH-ADX7000 is a new flagship pair of open-back headphones. According to the brand, they “provide the most natural, spacious, and comfortable listening experience of any Audio-Technica open-back headphones.”

The headphones have a true open-air design, so they need to be worn in the quietest possible environments. This design allows unrestricted airflow, which the company claims allows them to produce natural bass with no artificial resonance while maintaining pure mid and high frequencies.

Handcrafted in Japan

Naturally, Audio-Technica decked them out with 58mm custom-designed dynamic drivers — all handcrafted in its Japan facilities — that feature the brand’s proprietary High-Concentricity X Dynamic Transducer (HXDT) technology.

This is an innovative manufacturing process that uses precision molding to align all circular driver components (baffle plate, magnet, voice coil, and diaphragm) concentrically, resulting in “consistent diaphragm movement, improved transient response, and cleaner, more natural sound reproduction.”

The headphones have a high impedance of 490 ohms, so you’ll need a high-performing amplifier to power them properly.

The ATH-ADX7000 has a lightweight design — weighing roughly 9.5 ounces — and promises to be comfortable to wear for long listening sessions.

Additionally, they feature replaceable ear cushions. Audio-Technica includes two options: high-density velvet “for well-balanced audio” or Alcantara for “a fuller, warmer sound.” This allows listeners to customize their experience.

They also come with two different cable options: a balanced XLR cable and an unbalanced cable with a 6.3 mm (1/4-inch) gold-plated stereo plug.
