Ikea’s New Compact Speaker Is Shockingly Affordable

And it steals Sonos’s main trick for way, way less.

You may not know this, but Ikea has been in the audio game for quite a while. It started in the early 70s, when the company launched its Renn range of hi-fi products, consisting of a turntable, amplifier and a pair of bookshelf speakers. It even sold vinyl records for a time.

Today, the Swedish furniture giant no longer sells turntables or vinyl records, but it has a surprisingly extensive lineup of wireless speakers. It’s probably best known for its Symfonisk line that it made in collaboration with Sonos, but has since phased those out).

Now, Ikea has gotten pretty serious about affordable Bluetooth speakers for the home. In the last several months, the company has introduced numerous new models, including the Solskydd line, as well as the Kulglass table lamp speaker. All are designed to blend into the home.

None of them are more affordable than the newest addition to its speaker lineup, however.

Introduced at CES earlier this year, the Kallsup is a compact, cube-shaped Bluetooth speaker that’s super portable and primarily designed for home use. It lacks an IP rating and shouldn’t be taken anywhere water is present (and probably shouldn’t be taken in the bathroom, either).

The speaker is, well, small. It weighs seven ounces and stands just three inches tall. Inside, it packs a single 2.75-inch driver and its built-in battery is rated to last around nine hours (at half volume).

Group 100 together

Obviously, this tiny speaker’s sound isn’t going to blow you away, but it does have nifty trick to make up for it. Specifically, it plays well with others.

That’s right, you can pair up to 100 Kallsup speakers together over Bluetooth to create a kind of miniature multi-room audio speaker. Think of it as a super affordable alternative to a group of Sonos speakers.

$10 each

The best part of Ikea’s Kallsup? Each speaker costs just $10. So you can buy 20 of them for the price of roughly one Sonos speaker. Plus, they come in three different colors: green, white or pink.

As mentioned, Ikea gave us a first look at the Kallsup speaker earlier this year. But, as of this week, they’re officially available. A speaker costs just $10.
