Schiit Audio is best known for its affordable desktop hi-fi components, such as the $119 Magni headphone amplifier and the $149 Modi DAC, which perform well beyond their wallet-friendly price tags. (The brand ships everything directly to consumers, which keeps prices low.)

Now, for the first time, the now-Texas-based audio maker has introduced a portable hi-fi component, designed to elevate your listening experience whether you’re sitting at your desktop or riding the train to work.

And keeping with the brand’s ethos, the price tag won’t scare you off.

Schiit goes portable

Schiit Audio’s Vestri is a portable DAC and headphone amplifier that connects to your smartphone, laptop or tablet via USB-C and makes your wired headphones sound way better. (Because we all know, the built-in DAC/amp of your everyday gadgets isn’t very good.)

It has a seamless milled aluminum chassis, a glass front with touch controls, and balanced and single-ended headphone outputs. There’s no battery, so it draws all its power from your device.

It’s a no-frills, plug-and-play-ready hi-fi component.

Now, there are a lot of these portable DAC/amps out there, made by reputable hi-fi brands. But the Vestri is a standout, according to Jason Stoddard, Schiit’s Co-Founder.

“I joke when I say ‘Vestri is the only dongle that matters,’ Stoddard says. “Which is beyond cheeky, but in a field of 10,000 lookalike products all using the same off-the-shelf technology, it has a grain of truth.”

“The only Mesh portable”

The Vestri’s secret sauce is that it’s integrated with Schiit’s exclusive Mesh conversion technology, which combines a time- and frequency-domain-optimized digital filter with an on-board DAC. According to the brand, this results in “sonic performance far above its peers.”

To that end, Schiit is billing the Vestri as “the only Mesh portable.”

Additionally, the Vestri is integrated with the brand’s Unison USB digital technology, which helps ensure that it plugs in and works seamlessly with modern phones, tablets, computers and streamers.

It also has two headphone jacks, one 4.4mm (balanced) and one 3.5mm (single-ended), and is capable of delivering up to 400mW through its balanced output. Schiit claims that the Vestri can drive “virtually all headphones to their peak of performance.”

Schiit claims the Vestri has no moving parts, and a “eternal screen” with individual LEDs under glass that will never dim or burn in.
