The 2011 Volkswagen Touareg (tour-egg) brings with it both less and more. Less weight and more MPG’s. Dropping 460 lbs from its already popular predecessor, the new Touareg paired with a new 8-speed (yes, eight) transmission in 3.0 liter V6 hybrid form, will achieve 25 mpg or nearly 32 mpg when you opt for the 335 hp 4.3 liter TDI V8 diesel. The Touareg also inherits Volkswagen’s new aggressive design with a grill you might recognize from the 2010 Volkswagen GTI MK VI we tested. In combination with the distinct LED indicator lights and tighter lines, the overall look of the 2011 Touareg is far better than the outgoing model, not that the 2010 Touareg was too shabby in the looks department.

One of the things we’ve always loved about the Touareg is it’s ability to coddle you in modern features and comforts while maintaining its off-road abilities. The 2011 Touareg is no exception. Drivers will find a completely redesigned interior, more leg room, reclining/adjustable rear seats, 6.5″ touch screen navigation and audio system, a panoramic sunroof that’s touted as the largest of any SUV, a proximity “Area View” that utilizes four cameras to aid in safety, nine airbags, lane departure assist, side assist that warns of approaching vehicles from the rear, adaptive cruise control, Front Assist that can brake the vehicle when it senses a pending collision, bi-xenon headlights with dynamic assist that perceives oncoming traffic and adjust the light beams, and an adaptive roll compensation that gives the Touareg tighter road feel. For owners looking for completely differentiation, an “Exclusive” version is also available from Volkswagen Individual with custom order exterior and interior color options.

The standard all-wheel drive drivetrain in the 2011 Touareg have also been revised. You can order either the base 4Motion with Torsen limited-slip differential with an off-road driving program and Hill Descent Assist, or a Terrain Tech Package with the V6 TDI that allows the driver to select 100 percent locking of its mechanical differentials and four off-road programs. You may not consider taking a Touareg to Moab, but it’s nice knowing you can. We’re hoping to convince Volkswagen to get one into the Gear Patrol garage as soon as it’s available stateside. No price announced.
