After much drama, both with Jeremy Clarkson’s “fracas” over a steak on the old version of Top Gear and Chris Evans threatening to quit the new one before it even began, we’re finally getting our first look at what the rebooted Top Gear has to offer. BBC released the first official trailer; here are a few things we can expect from the new show:
What We Know So Far
• A Corvette Z06 with machine guns on it
• An implied race between a Viper ACR and an F/A-18 Super Hornet
• An Aston Martin Vulcan
• Matt LeBlanc in an Ariel Nomad
• Matt LeBlanc in a Reliant Rialto (which is entirely different from a Reliant Robin)
• A Ford Mustang Drifting in the snow
• The Stig in a big rig
• A Willys Jeep
• The Ferrari F12tdf at Paul Ricard
• Chris Evans being scared by Jenson Button in a McLaren
• Chris Evans being scared by Sabine Schmitz in an Audi R8, then spewing strawberries
Front and center in the new trailer are the two headline presenters, BBC DJ Chris Evans and Friends star Matt LeBlanc (hosts Chris Harris, Rory Reid and Eddie Jordan don’t seem to be featured, while Sabine Schmitz’s presence is small) paired with a bounty of stunning footage of hooliganism in cars both new and old. It’s exciting to see the new Top Gear will continue the tradition of both tomfoolery in cars as well as big, thrilling stunts, but there are still reasons to be skeptical. For one, the return of the Reliant three-wheelers suggest some tired jokes will be carried over from the Clarkson, Hammond and May era. Yet we remain optimistic. The new show will hit TV screens in the UK on May 8th, with broadcasting in America to begin later that month.
