Editor’s Note: We love scouring the internet for reasons to spend money we don’t have on cars we daydream about owning, and these are our picks this week. All prices listed are bid amounts at the time of publishing.
Now that it’s all but certain Subaru will be giving us a glimpse at the new WRX next month at the Tokyo Auto Show, a particular nostalgia has bubbled up about the older WRXs here at the Gear Patrol office. It’s hard not to love the WRX. Even the base model is wildly fantastic car and has proven itself time and time again that it’s a competent machine on both smooth, civilized roads and in the gravel and snow. So whether you’re looking for a standard WRX or the range-topping STI, it’s doubtful you’ll be disappointed with these four.
2002 Subaru Impreza WRX Sport
What we like: This is easily the most humble pick on the list. It’s certainly the oldest and has the highest mileage, which probably makes it a prime candidate to be your designated winter beater.
From the seller: N/A
Mileage: 157,670
Location: Ozone Park, New York
2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Race Car
What we like: An STI race car is, admittedly, only for a very specific buyer, but this one is in rare mint condition. Not to mention it’s not an amateur build: This STI was converted to race spec by the official Subaru Road Race Team.
From the seller: This 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi is one of two vehicles converted into race cars by the factory-backed Subaru Road Race Team (SRRT) when new. This example competed in the IMSA Continential Tire Sports Car Challenge GS class for the 2010 season and was purchased directly from SRRT by seller Greg Georgiadis in 2013. It has since been used in the Targa Newfoundland, U.S. Vintage Grand Prix, and various open track days.
Mileage: 8,647 (race miles)
Location: Syracuse, New York
2004 Subaru WRX STI
What we like: Normally it’s tough to justify an extremely modified used car — but this murdered-out WRX STI might be an exception.
From the seller: The engine is stock and fully built with performance parts that make it reliable and stronger. Equipped with Kicker Audio System and double dim touch screen.
Mileage: 150,000 (chassis) / 3,000 (engine)
Location: Saint Cloud, Florida
2015 Subaru WRX STI
What we like: This is basically a brand-new STI with an incredible discount. It’s low-mileage — barely broken in — and has been well maintained.
From the seller: Wheels are factory but were professionally painted BBS GK1 gold to achieve the classic blue and gold look. Never driven in snow or salt, I stored it in Florida from November to April for the past two years. Everything works as it should, and the car drives like new.
Mileage: 23,353
Location: West Islip, New York
