For the fourth year running, Ferrari takes home a Red Dot Best of the Best award for ground-breaking design, this time around it’s for the new Portofino. The front-engined V8 convertible is the latest in the line of entry-level grand tourers from Marinello, replacing the old Califonia T. Ferrari also earned awards for outstanding design quality for the 812 Superfast and the FXX K EVO.
The Portofino is leaps and bounds ahead of where its predecessor, the California was, design-wise. And the Red Dot jury seems to agree: “Embodying an impressive evolutionary advancement, the Ferrari Portofino fascinates with an exciting design language. It comes across as a fascinating sculptural statement. The integration of the retractable hardtop presents an optimal solution. The haunting elegance is further underscored by the uncompromising quality in material and workmanship. The Ferrari Portofino is the perfect embodiment of novel approaches that point into the future.”
Where the California carried awkward proportions in an attempt to hide the roof, when it was retracted and stored in the trunk, the Portofino looks natural, no matter what position the roof is in. Most importantly, for Ferrari as a brand, the entry-level Portofino looks much more closely related to the top-of-the-line 812 Superfast V12 grand tourer — the old California always came across with dulled down design, knocking on the door the Ferrari’s upper echelon cars, but never getting into the party.
As the Red Dot jury says, you can expect the Portofino’s design to stick around for a few years. Unlike its predecessor, the newest entry-level Ferrari has a forward-thinking design, to help it keep a healthy shelf-life. So expect upcoming Ferrari’s, both mid- and front-engined to incorporate the same design language to some degree.
