Garmin has unveiled its new RV 785 GPS navigator. Packing a high-resolution 7.0-inch display and features designed to ease the lives of recreational vehicle drivers, it’s basically the ultimate navigation unit custom-made for RV and camping enthusiasts.
The RV 785 provides RV-specific navigation instructions — and when we say RV-specific, we mean quite specific. It stores the size and weight of your RV, in order to deliver a customized route that factors in weight limits and steep road grades. The RV 785 also integrates with apps such as Ultimate Public Campgrounds, KOA, iOverlander and Plan RV to offer RV-oriented points of interest. It’s preloaded with a directory of RV parks and services for pit stops, as well as the HISTORY database of notable sites, a U.S. National Parks directory, and TripAdvisor ratings.
The RV 785 also includes a built-in dash camera, which is designed to record and easily save video of any traffic accidents or incidents — or particularly obnoxious vanity plates. The camera even can give an RV modern advanced safety features such as lane departure assist and forward collision warning. It also includes a video-in port for third-party wireless usage.
The Garmin Traffic system comes included with the wifi-capable RV 785 out of the box. Pairing with the Garmin Live smartphone app, the RV 785 can display live traffic updates, advanced weather forecasts, and input from photoLive traffic cameras on the navigation screen.
At a suggested retail price of $499.99, the Garmin RV 785 isn’t exactly as cheap as plugging an address into Google Maps on your phone. But replicating its array of features with other devices would almost certainly be harder, less safe and probably more expensive.
