The Back to the Future movies have been a cultural phenomenon ever since they burst onto the scene the 1980s. Vehicles, of course, played a vital role in the trilogy; the films featured rides ranging the gamut from a hoverboard to a 19th-century steam locomotive. But the movies have fueled a particular brand of automotive fetishism around two very different cars: the DeLorean DMC-12, which served as a time machine, and the 1985 Toyota pickup that hero Marty McFly drove.
And as it turns out, one Bring a Trailer user — aptly named McFly1985 — is currently selling pristine examples of both.
Bidding for each vehicle has already eclipsed $30,000. Both come with Back to the Future memorabilia and period literature to sweeten the deal. Which one would you buy?
1981 DeLorean DMC-12
The DeLorean DMC-12 is powered by the original 2.9-liter PRV V6, with a five-speed manual transmission. It only has 4,300 miles. The vehicle spent 25 years in storage, but it has had more than $20,000 worth of work rehabbing it since.
Alas, it does not come with a flux capacitor to facilitate time travel; in fact, we suspect it wouldn’t hit 88 mph, since no-fun government regulations at the time mandated an 85 mph speedometer. North of $30,000 may be pricey for a pure nostalgia play — but it will probably cost less than the upcoming classic remakes if those ever materialize.
1985 Toyota Xtra Cab Pickup
The Toyota pickup has 130,000 miles and a five-speed manual. It was converted to McFly spec in 2015 — the same year Toyota did its homage — with a black paint job, a suspension lift, tubular bumpers, towing mirrors, a roll bar and KC HiLites auxiliary lights. It’s a close-enough recreation to entice Flea to roll up on you at a stoplight, though it does have an aftermarket head unit and sub-woofers behind the seats. Presumably, a musical aficionado like Marty would have made similar mods when he got into hip-hop in subsequent years.
