When it comes to vehicular domiciles, camper vans, RVs and camping trailers tend to dominate the conversation these days. But there’s another whole category of transportation-affiliated housing that we don’t see quite as much buzz about: truck campers, which slide into a pickup’s bed.
Scout Campers is looking to change that. And with the launch of their new Scout Yoho 6.0, they’re making it easy for midsize pickup truck owners to transform their not-so-big rigs into mobile living arrangements.
The new Yoho is the second of the brand’s three-product portfolio, coming on the heels of the Scout Olympic 6.0 unveiled earlier in June. While that setup is made for full-size trucks like the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, the Yoho is designed to work with pickups like the Toyota Tacoma and Ford Ranger. (These midsized trucks are often favored over their bigger brethren by overlanders, as their more compact proportions are better for off-roading through tight trails.)
At just 913 pounds empty, it’s the lightest of its hard-walled kind, yet it doesn’t skimp on space: it’s tall enough inside for a six-foot-two-inch-tall person to stand up without touching the ceiling, and wide enough that said 6’2″ person — be they Bill Murray, Will Smith or Karlie Kloss — can just barely touch both walls at once.
Nor does it go light on features. There’s room for two to sleep inside atop the bed that juts out above the truck’s cab, while an L-shaped dining area offers plenty of room to sit and eat by day before converting into a second bed for two more at night. A 160-watt solar panel on the roof comes standard to feed power into a 1,045-watt-hour Yeti lithium-ion power pack; a moon roof offers ventilation and illumination, with LED lights inside and a solar porch light outside offering more of the latter. A 4.9-liter Lifesaver Water Storage jerry can with integrated water filter comes standard, too, so you won’t need to worry about stocking up on Poland Spring before venturing into the back country.
If you want to take your Yoho to the next level, you can option the Scout up with plenty of additional outdoor-ready accessories, too. A Dometic fridge/freezer, a Rhino Rack 270° Batwing Awning, a Newport 4.5 BTU Real Flame Fireplace, a Dometic portable toilet, a portable gas cooktop, removable camper jacks — they can all be yours, for a little extra cash. And with the Scout Yoho 6.0 starting at a reasonable $19,240, you’ll probably be able to add quite a few without breaking the bank.
