Ford’s New Mustang Carries the Legacy of a Legendary ’60s Classic

The Blue Oval just revealed the most powerful, most performance-focused drop-top Mustang to ever leave the factory.

Following a string of tantalizing previews throughout last year, Ford pulled back the curtain on its Dark Horse SC coupe back in January. To call the track-honed Mustang highly anticipated would be an understatement.

After all, the buzz ahead of the launch wasn’t just down to Blue Oval’s teasers. As Ford’s spiritual replacement for the Shelby GT500 of prior generations, it carried heavy expectations to deliver on legacy.

And now the Blue Oval has just doubled down with a new drop-top version. As the most powerful open-roof Mustang to date, it’ll arguably be even more effective than its closed-roof counterpart, as it’s a pony car that promises to keep the spirit of a 1960s legend alive for generations to come.

Dropping the top on the SC

As with the coupe, the Dark Horse SC convertible will be powered by a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 good for 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque. Moreover, like its stablemate, Ford is only offering the car with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for maximum open-air thrills.

Of course, there are inevitably some compromises that come with ditching the sheet metal of a coupe configuration. As a result, the Blue Oval has had to make a few choice adjustments to ensure the pony car still passes muster.

On the road, this means that the droptop adopts a more touring-focused mentality compared to its track-optimized sibling. Along with tuning the MagneRide suspension to be more forgiving for street driving, Ford’s engineers also switched up the seats to provide all-day comfort rather than firm support.

In any case, when you consider that the Dark Horse SC convertible even brings some slick new color options, it promises to be a truly head-turning expression of the Mustang badge. From the Precision Purple Metallic paint to the unique brake caliper colors and Black Onyx and Space Gray interior, it’s a vibrant assortment.

A callback to the 1968 KR

Even still, I’d argue the most impactful part of the Dark Horse SC convertible’s debut is that it revives the spirit of a famous droptop in the 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertible.

And that’s no small feat. The 1968 “King of the Road” is one of the rarest and most sought-after Mustangs in existence. Around 517 convertibles were built in total, and each one carried a big-block 428 Cobra Jet, an open-air cabin and, of course, heaps of racing pedigree.

While the new Dark Horse SC convertible doesn’t bear the Shelby name (or the legendary 428 V8, obviously), the outrageous power, performance focus and soft-top configuration are all very much in the same vein as those 1960s cars.

Moreover, back in the day, equipping a drop-top Mustang with an engine of that potency required reengineering the platform altogether with things like a strengthened hoop and thicker-gauge floor pans. Much like the Dark Horse SC, now, then, it was a vehicle that evolved to become something bigger than its humble pony car origins.

Availability and pricing

As of this writing, Ford hasn’t yet announced pricing for the 2027 Mustang Dark Horse SC. However, orders open this fall, with cars arriving in dealer showrooms in spring 2027.
