Ford’s New Small Electric Pickup Finally Gets a Name (and Price)

The Blue Oval’s UEV will still debut with a compact car-like pickup truck, but it won’t be called the Ranchero.

Last fall, Ford announced it would be shaking up the industry with a concept known as the universal electric vehicle (UEV). With a modular design and assembly-tree manufacturing, it promised to disrupt the BEV segment in price and range.

As if that wasn’t enough, the brand also stated that the first vehicle to bring the platform to market would be a compact pickup. Designed for affordability down to the inch, the truck sounded like a refreshing break from the usual industry bloat.

The Blue Oval still isn’t quite ready to reveal the upcoming truck in full, but it has at least decided on what to call it and how much it plans to charge. Meet (well, at least in name) the Fathom, Ford’s $28,350 challenge to the status quo.

Accessible modern potential

If you can’t fathom (sorry, just one) why Ford decided to name the truck what it did over something, say, a little more grounded in history, know that you’re not alone. I too had my hopes up for a Ranchero.

“Fathom is about unlocking potential, in a modern, accessible way.”

However, I now appreciate why the product team went against tradition, especially regarding the alphanumeric conventions of F-series trucks. It’s not a case of leveraging an existing brand as with models like the Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning.

Rather, having pored through the archives and spent nine months fielding names as part of the decision process, Ford decided that any historical moniker set an expectation different from what this new pickup is meant to become.

According to Kay Hart, General Manager, Ford Model e, “Fathom is about unlocking potential, in a modern, accessible way. Fathom is an all-new vehicle, developed from the ground-up on the new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform, using the new assembly tree manufacturing process and bringing new technology to Ford and the industry. All of these innovations called for a new, bold name.”

Besides, in keeping with its MO, the Fathom promises a novelty that goes beyond its production process. To make it practical and keep it accessible, Ford is having to look at trucks a little bit differently.

Adapting alongside you

To that point, the Fathom name also comes from the word’s definition meaning “to penetrate and come to understand.” From implementing a bounty strategy to focusing on slippery aero efficiency, Ford has sought new ways of understanding its target market.

The result being a vehicle set to take shape as something with more passenger room than a Toyota RAV4 while also having a frunk and a bed for storage. As far as who it’s for?

According to Hart, the Fathom is “made to help meet the needs of many different drivers and use cases. Fathom adapts right alongside you. With its blend of technology, adaptability, value, and a drive that’s genuinely fun, Ford Fathom delivers real benefits for anyone with a busy life.”

While Ford is keeping specs and other details under wraps for now, we do at least know that the truck will bring a generous suite of tech. From BlueCruise hands-free driving to CarPlay, digital key and V2L power, it promises a lot more than a Bezos-backed upstart in its efforts to provide for modularity.

Availability and pricing

According to Ford’s announcement, pricing for the Fathom will start at $28,350 for models equipped with a standard-range battery. Preorders are set to start in early 2027, so more details should follow soon in the coming months.
