Genesis’s Gorgeous Performance Wagon Could Take Down Germany’s Best

Are you tired and bored with the overwhelming selection of SUVs that continue to plague the land? Well, Genesis might have the next cure for the anti-SUV crowd.

At around the same time of the LA Auto Show, Genesis held a massive media event in France to celebrate its first decade in business. It also revealed its shocking Magma supercar concept.

But in a completely unexpected move, the automaker also surprised the world with what could be one of the year’s best-looking concepts: the G90 Wingback. And now, the company officially shared some details about it.

Quite simply, it has us drooling.

As one can tell from the name, the Wingback is based on Genesis’s Mercedes S-Class fighter, the G90 flagship sedan. But rather than just morphing it into a soul-sucking crossover, its team just extended its roof and gave it a seriously sporty-looking treatment.

Designers also widened the wheel arches at both ends, added a few bespoke appointments at the rear hatch — such as the integrated rear spoiler — and molded aerodynamic fins on the roof to mimic mounting bars.

Rounding it out are more aggressive front and rear lower fascias, quad-tipped exhaust in the integrated rear diffuser, lowered side sills, and gorgeous 22-inch multi-spoke wheels.

The result is one seriously suave wagon that could put the BMW M5 Touring, Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes-AMG E 53 Estate to shame. And, it’s hands down one of the most badass-looking wagons we’ve seen in a long time.

It also proves how much cooler wagons can be over boring SUVs. Even the automaker’s Chief Creative Officer, Luc Donckerwolke, admitted that he and his team penned the Wingback as a countermovement to the popularity of SUVs.

“At the moment there is, let’s say, a multiplication of SUVs. And this fast growth will create a saturation,” Donckerwolke said while introducing the Wingback.

“This is when other typologies of cars are going to become attractive again. This is why I strongly believe in not having a typology monoculture.”

But more so, it’s an example of how far Genesis is willing to go to build a following for its up-and-coming Magma performance division. The Korean luxury carmaker is in the midst of introducing Magma to take on BMW M, Mercedes-AMG and Audi RS.

The Wingback has the potential to go into production

After Mercedes-AMG and Audi RS proved that buyers globally and even in America are willing to pay for hot wagons with the high-po E-Class Estate and RS6 Avant, BMW followed suit.

Earlier this year, BMW introduced the M5 Touring to America for the first time in history. Prior, BMW resisted the urge to sell the hot 5er wagon Stateside after believing there wasn’t a business case for them for decades.

But clearly, something (i.e. demand) changed BMW’s mind, and the M5 Touring is officially in the US.

With the trend obviously growing in popularity and converting to actual sellable products, Genesis could be on board with making its own. And the G90 Wingback is its first pitch at the idea.

Genesis didn’t say whether or not the Wingback would reach production status. But according to some sources, the company did hint that there’s a strong possibility for it.
