It seems the dreams of old-school GM four-wheeling fans may be coming true. Word from enthusiast site, GMAuthority, reports the General’s upscale SUV and truck division could be injecting a major dose of nostalgia into its new rumored Jimmy off-roader revival.

Not too long ago, hearsay began surfacing, indicating GM’s apparent effort to revive the Jimmy as a new, dedicated off-roader. The model would set its sights directly on the likes of the current Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco.

But instead of disappointing fans from the get-go, another rumor popped up suggesting the new Jimmy will go completely retro with its design.

Harking back to the “square body” days

According to the report, GMAuthority spoke with some unnamed insiders close to the matter. And in that discussion, GM’s designers are reportedly sourcing their inspiration from the original big, square-bodied Jimmy from the 1970s and 1980s.

That would be the OG Chevrolet K5 Blazer-based models. The K5 Blazer and Jimmy both served as the original competitor to the big-bodied Bronco (yes, that Bronco) up through the early 1990s. Other competitors included the original Jeep Cherokee and Dodge Ramcharger.

This is some exciting news as fans have been clamoring for a new Jimmy for years. The last time the model rolled off the assembly line was the smaller, S-10-based version from 1998 through 2005. At which point, the Jimmy had become a total shadow of its former past.

The Envoy later succeeded the Jimmy as buyers sought more fuel-efficient, car-like and smaller alternatives to the original, rugged SUVs. However, skepticism also surrounds this supposed new Jimmy revival. Since the rumors surfaced, fans have been hoping for a model that resembles the OG versions from the ’70s and ’80s.

But now, Jimmy lovers can hopefully put any new model skepticism to some degree of rest. That’s because GM has known history of reviving old nameplates, only to slap them onto cars that simply don’t do the originals justice.

One of the most recent, coincidentally and ironically, is the latest Blazer crossover SUV.

A GM off-roader would complete the Detroit trifecta

Ford and Jeep have been dominating the Detroit thoroughbred off-roader niche with the Bronco and the Wrangler for quite some time now. GM’s been the only player out the Detroit Big Three who hasn’t had a dedicated four-by-four in years.

The company’s tried spinning off some seriously rugged trucks based on their pickups. Such includes the AEV versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and Colorado, along with the GMC AT4 models.

But none of them stacked up the same ways to take on the Wrangler and Bronco directly. Not to mention, both the former and latter sport rather retro designs to boot.

Additionally, other rumors say the new Jimmy will strictly come with a V8, all to appease old-school four-wheeling fans. Should all these rumors hold water, the Jimmy could end up being one of the most exciting old-school GM revivals in years. And we’re all for it.
