Here’s an American automotive brand that wasn’t entirely on our radar for a potential comeback: Hummer. The General Motors-owned nameplate recently celebrated the opening of its new Advanced Design Pasadena Studio in California.

Alongside the celebration of the new facility came the debut of two new GMC Hummer X concepts, the Hummer X Truck and SUV. They represent ideas for new models that could potentially diversify GM’s portfolio.

All the more so because the demand for more affordable and smaller vehicles is only increasing.

Are we about to get some new Hummers?

If you’re about to remind us that Hummer already made its return through the 2022 launch of the massively silly GMC Hummer EV, don’t worry. We know.

However, the Hummer EV is neither affordable nor small. It’s the marque’s flagship all-electric SUV, and it commands close to a six-figure price tag. Moreover, it weighs as much as a planet (10,000 pounds), and it can barely fit in most parking spots and side streets.

Thus, it’s hardly a Hummer for the people. That’s where the Hummer X Concepts come in.

GM opened its new design center in California to commemorate over 40 years of presence in the region. It’s been the home to many of the brand’s concepts and design work.

Because it’s a big moment in GM history, the automaker also saw it as an opportunity to shine some light on some its latest ideas. One of which is the possible revival of Hummer as a standalone brand with a comprehensive lineup.

As one can tell from the pictures and renderings, the GMC Hummer X Concepts are much smaller than the Hummer EV. Still, the familiar design language and shared DNA are clearly present.

Considering today’s market climate and the growing demand for smaller and more affordable pickups, it’s safe to say GM could be hinting at some new prospects.

The Hummer H2, H3 and H3T Alpha could finally see their successors

But what’s most interesting about these concepts is that they each allow for plenty of possibilities. Such include the potential successor to the old H2 and H3. Remember those?

Back in the 2000s, GM tried to establish Hummer as another SUV brand, all to cash in on the demand for big, flashy high-riders. This effort gave birth to the GMT800 Chevrolet Tahoe/GMC Yukon-based Hummer H2.

It also gave us the smaller, GMT300 Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon-based H3. And of course, the very limited two-year-production Hummer H3T Alpha midsize pickup truck.

Although opinions of the Hummer H2 and H3 may vary, they were both conceptually sound vehicles. They also diversified GM’s truck portfolio beyond the usual suspects, giving buyers some interesting and alternative options.

However, when the H2 and H3 debuted, they entered the market during troubling times. The 2008 global financial crisis essentially ruined GM at the time and crippled Hummer’s growth.

Once the models reached the end of their production lifecycle, GM essentially put Hummer on ice. The brand simply wasn’t favorable amid high gas prices and a shift in consumer demand for more fuel-efficient vehicles.

But with buyers demanding smaller and cheaper pickups and SUVs, and with more abundance of fuel-saving technologies, this could be Hummer’s time to shine again.

Mulling the possibilities

The Hummer X Concept Truck is obviously a pickup. Unsurprisingly, then, it channels some design elements from the old H3T Alpha. That was GM’s attempt at trying to resuscitate the midsize pickup market with the Hummer brand, alongside the then-new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

As preexisting contenders like the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger and even the Jeep Gladiator have all proven, midsize pickups are in demand.

GM still offers the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. However, they’ve fallen a little by the wayside due to their age. The introduction of a new, Hummer-branded midsize pickup could reinvigorate GM’s presence in the segment.

There’s also the Hummer X Concept SUV, which obviously suggests a potential new SUV from the brand. It could very much signal a potential successor to the H2 or H3. Judging by the size and visual proportions, it looks to be much larger than a midsize contender.

Whether these ideas will make it to production has yet to be determined. Still, that GM is putting resources into these concepts and the GMC Hummer brand at large is cause enough for them to be taken seriously.
