This Texas-Based Tuner Just Made the Ford Expedition Raptor That Dearborn Won’t

Car enthusiasts love to dream up crazy concoctions that manufacturers won’t even entertain. Thankfully, we have tuning firms, like Texas’s own Hennessey Performance, which help such dreams become a reality.

And that’s what Hennessey just did for Ford Expedition fans who’ve been hoping for an extra spicy model. The company has revealed its latest project, which is basically as close as it comes to an actual Raptor-ized variant.

Fun not just for you, but for the family as well

If there’s anyone who knows how to inject more “yee-haw” into a vehicle, it’s Hennessey Performance.

It’s called the Ford Expedition VelociRaptor, and it follows Hennessey’s naming convention typically used on its hyped-up F-150s. Just like the name and appearances suggest, the model is basically an Expedition Tremor on steroids and stilts.

As such, the Expedition VelociRaptor benefits from a healthy list of changes. However, Hennessey broke with tradition by refraining from making any tweaks under the hood.

Nonetheless, the SUV benefits from significant suspension, brake and tire upgrades to improve its off-road capabilities. For instance, Hennessey equips a lift kit that raises the vehicle’s ground clearance by a whopping two inches.

The company then fits its own custom-designed 20-inch bespoke Hennessey Performance Wheels, wrapped up in beefy all-terrain tires. To ensure the car sufficient stopping power with the upgraded rubber, company engineers also added a high-performance Brembo brake kit.

Chassis upgrades aren’t the only revisions on the parts bin list, as there are some subtle aesthetic upgrades, too. Hennessey also adds a power-retractable running board system to make for easier ingress and egress.

The front bumper cover gets a rework to incorporate a high-output LED lighting bar. Moreover, Hennessey adds a beefier skid plate under the front end of the vehicle to better protect all the important bits.

And the result is one seriously badass-looking Expedition. Now, it’s just missing a roof rack, some extra auxiliary lighting, a snorkel and maybe a pop-up tent.

Sticking with stock power

What’s a bit shocking, however, is that Hennessey retains the Expedition Tremor’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6. Not that that’s a bad thing, as the mill still pumps out a healthy 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of twist.

But Hennessey tends to headline its creations with a whole buncha under-the-hood upgrades, yielding crazy power. For instance, the last Ford-based Hennessey build, the F-150 Lowered, boasts almost twice the power as the Expedition’s EcoBoost.

Regardless, the Expedition VelociRaptor is certainly a cut above what Ford offers from the factory. Next time, we’d love to see the brand shoehorn a Coyote V8 under the hood, along with a supercharger or some other power upgrades that fall more in line with Hennessey’s typical mission.

Because, you know, the Cadillac Escalade V can only march on for so long without a true rival (even if it comes from an aftermarket source). Seeing as the Expedition is basically an F-150 with a complete long-roof body, why wouldn’t it be possible?

Availability and pricing

Hennessey announced the Expedition VelociRaptor’s availability as immediate. The company also noted it will be extremely limited, as production is capped at an unspecified number. Pricing details will also be disclosed to potential customers upon inquiry.

Considering an Expedition Tremor starts at $82,195, the VelociRaptor will likely command quite a pretty penny.
