Ford’s Most Ambitious Performance Vehicles Are Changing Priorities for the Better

The Blue Oval is opening up one of its most daring automotive performance programs to new and exciting opportunities.

Whether it be because of repeated Pikes Peak dominance or blistering sub-seven quarter-miles, Ford’s ongoing chase for performance has led the company to some shocking feats.

If there’s one common theme to these efforts, it’s that they’ve come courtesy of the Blue Oval’s Demonstrators. As paragons of EV potential, they’ve all worked to challenge the notion of what’s possible with battery power.

However, following the industry’s pivot away from electric powertrains, Ford is resetting its priorities. According to a new report, the automaker is opening its Demonstrator program to fresh possibilities.

Ford has new performance priorities

Those being hybrid and gas power. As part of a recent talk with Autocar, Ford Racing frontman Mark Rushbrook said the group is “not going to restrict ourselves to full electric”.

It’s a marked change in MO. Originally, the Blue Oval established the Demonstrator program because it sought EV testing environments that wouldn’t require abiding by the rules of a single series. Rushbrook noted, “We wanted the ability to truly learn with a free canvas.”

Toward that end, though Ford Racing is currently providing Redbull with power units as part of a fresh Formula 1 partnership, a shift in its lineup means the scope of its development needs is also changing.

Beyond vetting its hybrid tech at the highest levels of motorsport, then, it’ll continue to push the envelope in other arenas.

As Mark Rushbrook put it, “we also have a lot of hybrids coming, and we also have a lot of combustion vehicles coming. So we’ll do more demonstrators, but you will see more powertrain technology in them, not just full electric.”

A resume of shocking EV efforts

If you’re even remotely familiar with Ford’s past Demonstrator efforts, the confirmation is cause to be excited.

After all, no matter your particular attitude towards electric power, such vehicles amounted to monumental projects. Their performance capabilities proved that Dearborn can really move the needle when it wants to.

In the case of the SuperVan, Ford revived a decades-old nameplate for two totally different applications. As the 4.0, the outlandish E-Transit harnessed 1,973 horsepower for a sub-two 0-60 mph time. When revised for version 4.2, it channeled that blistering straight-line speed into dominant runs at both Pikes Peak and the Nurburgring.

Ford’s Demonstrator efforts extend to production vehicles like the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning, too, as it has overhauled both for hill climb applications. What’s more, the former has also offered visions of next-gen NASCAR racers, while the latter has served as the platform for impactful off-road upgrades.

And that’s not even addressing restomods like the Eluminator F-100. Suffice to say, then, that with Ford expanding the reach of the program to include hybrid and gas vehicles, the opportunities for its Demonstrators to wow are now more open than ever.
