If Jeep’s Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer flagship range has you confused about what’s what, you’re not alone. The Auburn Hills will be addressing that in the very near future.

During a preview of what’s to come over the next several months, Jeep CEO Bob Broderdorf confirmed that the Wagoneer is going bye-bye. But, not in the traditional sense of being discontinued.

Rather, the automaker is consolidating the nameplate and rebadging the models as Jeeps. They’ll also be sold strictly as “Grand Wagoneer.” The goal: make it less confusing for both consumers and dealers.

Jeep tried copying Land Rover’s lineup market strategy, it didn’t work

When Jeep launched the current Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in 2022, the automaker embarked on a new marketing strategy. In essence, the company mimicked what Land Rover did with its lineup branding, and spun-off supposed “sub-brands” by dividing its vehicle lineup under a nameplate hierarchy.

For instance, Land Rover branded all of its Range Rover models as “Range Rover,” and thus, badged their variants, such as the Sport and Velar, as models of the “Range Rover brand.”

The idea was to separate nameplates into their own little niches to make them more distinguishable from one another. While they were marketed and branded as “Range Rover,” they ultimately were still Land Rovers.

Jeep tried the same thing with the Wagoneer nameplate by badging them strictly as “Wagoneer” or “Grand Wagoneer.” Both were void of any Jeep badges.

The initial idea was to separate the Wagoneer as a sort of micro-spin-off from the Jeep brand. It was also the company’s attempt at seeing if a luxury sub-brand marketing attempt would work.

But sadly, it did not. Rather, badging the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer strictly as Wagoneer models simply led to more confusion, among dealers, customers and even journalists.

Add to the fact that there are two types of Wagoneer models, and it led to a dizzying labeling effect that was just hard to wrap heads around.

As a result, the marketing and product planners at Jeep heard the feedback and went straight to work addressing the issue.

“You guys…you’ve been critical. You’ve had points you’ve made, you’ve had points our customers made, our dealers have made. So there’s some things we just need to call out, and we just need to say what we’re changing,” Broderdorf said in his presentation, prefacing the new plan for Wagoneer.

“What’s going on? It’s a lot. We’ve confused our buyers, we’ve confused our dealers. And I’m here to tell you, we got the message. We’re fixing it, step one” he said.

Wagoneer? Grand Wagoneer? Only Grand Wagoneer now

For the newly updated Wagoneer models, which are imminently due for reveal in the coming weeks, Jeep will be reverting back to its old nomenclature theme.

While the Wagoneer is gearing up for its midcycle refresh, the team is addressing one of the model’s biggest criticisms: the badging.

Jeep is reviving its core brand badge for Wagoneer models. But more so, the company is discontinuing the standalone Wagoneer nameplate in favor of just “Grand Wagoneer.”

This is all in an effort to simplify the naming strategy. It got even more confusing with detailed designations, such as “Series II,” and “Series III.”

“With the Jeep badge. The Jeep badge is now. Officially back. And frankly, it should have been there the whole time,” Broderdorf said while addressing media.

The Grand Wagoneer will still be offered with two wheelbase sizes for 2026.

“And if it looks like a Jeep, it drives like a Jeep, it feels like a Jeep, it should always be a Jeep. Period. That’s what we make, that’s what we sell. Step two. No more standalone Wagoneer nameplate.”

“The Wagoneer versus the Grand Wagoneer, what’s the difference? Is the Wagoneer sub-brand? Is it a Jeep?” Broderdorf continued. “Moving forward, the lineup is consolidated under one clear, iconic name. Jeep Grand Wagoneer. This simplifies the portfolio, unifies the brand, and makes the nameplate easier to understand.”

While this might not sound like a huge change, vehicle naming and nomenclature matters. Not only does confusion lead to marketing issues, it can compromise sales by overwhelming the customer.

But that’s not all that’s changing with the Wagoneer. Stay tuned in the coming weeks.
