Nissan’s Newest Camper Van Is Enough to Put Volkswagen on Notice

Eifelland ‘s take on Nissan’s new electrified van raises the bar on off-the-grid glamping.

Volkswagen’s ID. Buzz has another rival to worry about, and it’s from Nissan and German outfitter Eifelland. It’s called the Relax, and it’s based on Nissan’s most recent Interstar multi-purpose vehicle (a “van” as we’d call it here in America).

Although it may be another camper van joining the seemingly forever-expanding segment, the Relax takes advantage of the Interstar’s flexible powertrain options. In this latest case, it’s the Interstar-E getting the spotlight.

Another emissions-free glamping option

If you’ve never heard of Eifelland, the coachbuilding firm has actually been around since 1961. It started making camper vehicles and trailers before embarking on a brief decade-long stint building and sponsoring Formula One racecars in the 1970s.

Afterwards, the company went back to making affordable caravan trailers. The kind of camper trailers that old Top Gear absolutely loved …to destroy.

Eifelland’s latest efforts have since moved to the exploding camper van space. The latest Interstar-E-based Relax raises the bar once again.

Because it’s based on the all-electric Interstar-E, the Relax benefits from the van’s latest electrified powertrain. With its 87-kilowatt-hour battery, the Interstar-E Relax is capable of up to 255 miles of driving range.

Its electric motor pumps out a modest 143 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. So clearly, the Interstar-E Relax is ideal if you’re not in much of a hurry, which is implied by its name.

But the benefit to the battery is complete, off-the-grid glamping without any need for any noisy or smelly internal combustion-based power or tethering requirements.

Simple, yet well-equipped

While many other camper vans come across as over-the-top, the Eifelland Relax keeps things simple. It helps to keep initial costs down and ensures it remains an affordable option.

There’s no fancy, trick pop-up roof (although that is an option on fancier Relax models). However, there’s still plenty of space for up to four adults, depending on the interior arrangement.

At the back of the van lies a raised queen-sized platform bed for two. The middle section comprises two additional passenger seats that can slide and swivel on their mounts for added interior versatility.

Similarly to other camper vans, the front seats can also pivot and face rearward for the foldable kitchen dinette table. And inside is enough storage space as well as a well-stocked kitchenette set with all the necessary fixings.

But the Interstar-E’s biggest party piece is the van’s vehicle-to-load (V2L) ability to power all of the van’s onboard electric amenities using its main propulsion battery pack.

Availability and pricing

Eifelland’s van conversions are ready to order through its own channels. However, because they’re largely based on Euro-spec MPVs (the other option being a rebadged Volkswagen Crafter MAN TGE base), they’re likely exclusive to the European and Asian markets.

Should you be lucky enough to live in those markets, an Eifelland Nissan Interstar-E starts at a rather affordable €89,900, or around $102,000 USD with today’s conversion rates.
