What do you get when classic vintage styling meets off-road capability? Scamp’s latest egg camper, the X.

This tiny trailer may look adorable, but it’s been designed to get off-road with the best of them.

The Scamp X isn’t just notable because it’s the latest release from the storied RV maker; this is the first off-road design the brand has debuted in its more than 50-year history.

While the brand may not (yet) be a household name like Airstream, this new release could help it go mainstream.

Adventure, unhindered

In case you aren’t familiar, Scamp got its start in 1971 with fiberglass camper pods that were hugely popular at the time. While its present-day lineup looks almost identical to those early models, there have been some notable innovations under the surface in the past five decades … as evidenced by the brand’s latest release.

The Scamp X’s fiberglass construction lends itself well to life on the road: it’s lightweight, leakproof, durable and more affordable than competitor alternatives.

The curvy little 13-footer may be compact, but it can still fit a family of four. Borrowing design language from its road-focused counterparts, the new trailer sits on top of a heavy duty Timbren HD 3500 long-travel suspension setup and ST235/75R15 off-road-ready tires.

The X also features 18 inches of ground clearance, an increase of six inches over the standard Scamp 13.

Vintage remix

There are a few important changes specific to the interior and exterior of the X, as well. Inside, the iconic U-shaped dinette is complemented by new cushions and a new countertop.

Two 20-pound tanks double the propane capacity compared to the original Scamp, and an optional 400-W solar panel system is available for charging the onboard 27 Series leisure battery. There’s also an included portable Bluetooth speaker.

Outside, roof-mounted solar panels, an optional front storage rack for extra gear and a new black awning improve comfort and convenience offgrid.

The Scamp X is available in two layout packages, both of which borrow from the classic Scamp 13: both the Trek and Altitude layouts feature a full kitchen and rear “U” dinette, but while the Trek comes with a front sofa/ bunk, the Altitude opts for a front bath/shower. The dinette can be converted to a double bed in both models.

The Scamp X’s base weight is a minimal 1,986 pounds, and the egg trailer is capable of a 3,500 pound gross vehicle weight (thanks to its upgraded suspension.)

More optional add-ons include a furnace, air conditioner, TV/Starlink internet, portable toilet or outdoor shower.

Availability and pricing

The Scamp X is available to order now from the brand’s official website, starting at $28,495.
