Toyota Taps The North Face to Give Older Japanese Land Cruisers a Fresh Lease on Life

The automaker’s in-house customization brand has a new package for the J150 Prado that’s inspired by outdoor gear.

While plenty of cars built for auto shows will never make the jump to production, that’s not to say that every concept is consigned to fantasy.

Quite the contrary, as one of this year’s Tokyo Auto Salon debuts was actually previewed at the Japan Mobility Show last fall. Following overwhelming demand, Toyota had no choice but to heed customers’ wishes and work with The North Face to turn it into a factory-backed reality.

It’s called the Newscape, and it’s a sustainability initiative being handled by the Toyota Coniq Pro’s Corde by division that’s intended to give older Land Cruiser Prado models a refresh.

A rugged TNF overhaul

Now, it’s worth noting that this package is only available for the Prado J150 and to owners in Japan. Still, seeing as Toyota also sold that version of the Land Cruiser as the Lexus GX in the United States, each of these builds at least deserves a spot on the proverbial mood board.

Especially because of their The North Face influences. Interestingly enough, the colors themselves are supposedly inspired by several staples from the brand’s catalog.

For instance, the two-tone livery on the Graphite Gray option is meant to represent the American brand’s color-blocked outerwear, while the Mango Orange accents mimic the hue found on the 1997 Mountain Light Jacket. By contrast, the Meld Gray with Saffron Yellow option recalls the same pairing found on The North Face’s Geodome 4 tent.

Color choices aside, the Newscape brings plenty of stylistic updates to the discontinued Land Cruiser Prado. Regardless of which option owners choose, the overhaul includes a rear ladder, a roof rack and a fuel lid stamped with The North Face logo.

Add to that a set of matte black alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber and outfitted with mud flaps, and the Newscape is made only better by the changes it brings inside.

Exercises in sustainability

That’s because, in addition to continuing the TNF theme in the form of a co-branded glove box and some fresh floor mats, the Newscape package also furthers its sustainability goals through a new eco-conscious upholstery.

It’s known as Brewed Protein, and it comes courtesy of Japanese biotech firm Spiber. The outfit has collaborated with The North Face to introduce the fiber on apparel in the past, but this is the first time it’s seen an automotive application.

Though it exhibits similar qualities to cashmere, wool and silk, it’s a plant-based fabric wherein sugar is the the primary ingredient used for production. (It involves a process known as protein fermentation if you’d like to learn more.)

In any case, this means that, along with extending the lifespan of older Land Cruisers through added accessories and stylistic updates, the Newscape package has the added benefit of avoiding doing so with petroleum-based products.

Pricing and availability

The Newscape package will be available to order through Toyota Corde by dealers in Japan starting Saturday, March 7, 2026.

Unfortunately, it won’t come cheap. Per Toyota Coniq Pro, the total is expected to run buyers around  ¥8,000,000 (roughly $51,000). The estimated price includes the cost of a donor as well as that of the Newscape installation which runs from ¥3,850,000 (roughly $24,500).
