The Seiko 5 is the quintessential beginner watch thanks to a mechanical movement and reliable build quality that are offered at an incredibly low price. But what a lot of people don’t realize is just how many Seiko 5 references are out there. Case in point: here are two diver-style 5’s that are available on Massdrop right now, and there’s a good chance you didn’t even realize they existed.
The first is SRPB3X, dubbed the “Baby Monster” as it takes the overall look of the SKX-series “Monster” but puts it in a smaller, more affordable package. The other is the SRPC6X which has a rounder case and thinner bezel that echo the look of the iconic “Tuna.” Both watches use the trusty 4R36 automatic movement and are water-resistant to 100 meters. Similarly, both models come in multiple colorways. That’s some solid watch for the $170 and $140 starting prices that Massdrop is asking for.
A note on Massdrop:
Massdrop is not like other online retailers. It’s a members-only site that requires signing up (all it takes is an email address). If you’re not a member, you can sign up here. When you place an order from Massdrop at a discounted price, you’re not buying from them directly. The site works by taking orders from consumers, then bulk ordering product at a discount directly from brands and other wholesalers. For more information on how Massdrop works, click here.
