When we first saw Blackyak’s Modicana jacket at Outdoor Retailer, we named it one of the best new products of the year. The coat is part of the South Korea-based apparel brand’s Midshell collection, which combines properties from mid-layers with those of outer layers to produce versatile pieces that can be worn as either. Blackyak exhibits this idea in the Modicana with a soft, stretchy shell that’s also waterproof yet impressively breathable. The interior is lined with merino wool for warmth and wicking; the cuffs, hem and hood include a form-fitting sticky elastic that promotes movement.
All of these details — it’s clear just by looking at it how much the designers thought about its construction — make the Modicana the type of jacket that can be worn as functionally with other pieces as it can go it alone. Right now, as part of Backcountry’s winter clearance sale, it’s 30 percent off, which amounts to a savings of over $100. The great thing is that while the Modicana is an excellent jacket for winter, it isn’t strictly a winter jacket.
