Alex Mill is a New York brand helmed by Mickey Drexler, the man who made Gap and J.Crew household names while founding Old Navy and Madewell, and his son, Alex. It is a relatively small operation, which allows the Drexlers and their team to focus on quality and attention to detail.

Much like Gap in the 1990s and J.Crew in the 2000s, Alex Mill is focused on staple pieces that anchor a wardrobe and will look good for generations. Classic, time-tested pieces like the British farm jacket.

I’m a devout Barbour fan, and I admittedly couldn’t find anything missing from the Regent Jacket when I got my hands on it. It is, of course, made from waxed cotton of a similar weight to the Bedale.

The brown version has a distressed texture that mimics coveted vintage Barbour jackets, gnarled from years of hard wearing. It is joined by an all-black version, which is my favorite color for waxed jackets.

Let it rain

One detail that Alex Mill includes with the Regent Jacket and Barbour typically sells separately, at least with the men’s line, is a detachable storm hood. It is made of matching waxed cotton and attaches with snaps under the collar, fastens around the front and has a drawstring.

Another weather-resistant tweak is that the storm flap that covers the two-way zipper is slightly wider on the Regent Jacket than on the Bedale and most other Barbour jackets. However, this is more of an aesthetic difference than a functional one.

Tartan and all

The Regent Jacket mirrors the Bedale with dual welted hand warmer pockets, bellows waist pockets with fold-over snap flaps, a throat latch and metal ventilation eyelets under the armpits.

The collar and cuffs are lined with corduroy, though it is a slightly wider wale than the variety found on Barbour jackets. Alex Mill even gave the Regent Jacket a cotton tartan lining.
