At some point, while we weren't looking, the world of sport sort of recommenced. The Tour de France, the bike race all others build up to, kicked off "the season" in August and September. The Giro d'Italia, happening this month, is the second Grand Tour of 2020.
Meanwhile, the London Marathon kicked off as an elite-only race (45,000 or so runners competed virtually), and the MLB playoffs, French Open and NBA Finals are all in progress. Maybe these events wouldn't have taken us by surprise if we didn't have our heads buried in a (sand)pile of new gear — more on that below.
Asics Gel-Kayano Lite
Asics is making a habit of lightening up its most popular runners. Its Gel-Nimbus Lite earned a spot on our list of the best running shoes available, and now the company is giving the treatment to another foot-favorite, the Kayano. The Lite version is two not-insubstantial ounces lighter than the Kayano 27, thanks to an engineered mesh upper and new cushioning, but it still packs the support the shoe is known for.
Doxa Core Collection
New duds from this Copenhagen-based running brand include reflective graphics that create visibility during shorter days without compromising the understated style Doxa is known for. There's a piece for every type of run, but the Core Jacket (pictured above) stands out as an ideal cold-weather layer.
Rapha Pro Team Long Sleeve Training Jersey
Rapha might be making a psychedelic splash at the Giro d'Italia with its Palace collaboration, but the brand's subtler Pro Team Long Sleeve Training Jersey might make more sense for the everyday rider. This race-fit piece of kit is ideal for fall weather and features expanding pockets so you can bring everything you need on your next cool-weather ride.
Nike Air Zoom Tempo Next%
"If you need a shoe to support consistent, fast-paced runs, I doubt there are options that perform to the standards set by Nike's Air Zoom Fly Tempo NEXT% shoe," writes one of our running shoe testers, who has already logged nearly 100 miles in Nike's new runners. The shoes draw inspiration from the higher-end pair that Eliud Kipchoge wore to run the first sub-two-hour marathon last year, but they're more durable and aimed at everyday running.
Ten Thousand Tee
To make a new workout shirt, Ten Thousand launched a pilot program, surveyed feedback from over 4,000 customers and collected data from 2,000 hours of testing by fitness pros. Apparently, it revealed a lot because the brand chose to make not one new tee but three. There's the Versatile Shirt for HIIT workouts and circuits, the Lightweight Shirt for running and rowing, and the Durable Shirt for hitting the weight bench.
The Best New Fitness Products of September 2020
Tracksmith released a backpack for run commuting, Ten Thousand unveiled a durable workout short, Jaxjox showed off smart dumbbells and more.
