I have been working out at gyms in some form or another since I was about 13 years old. That means I’ve spent a solid 25 years trying to find what works best for me, including testing dozens of sneakers that range from running sneakers to dedicated weightlifting shoes.

As a multi-discipline fitness enthusiast who gets bored doing just one style of exercise for too long, I’ve come to accept that, as far as footwear is concerned, versatility is my top priority.

To date, the best all-around fitness shoe I’ve ever had the pleasure of using is the Reebok Nano X5. I wear them for nearly every workout I do.

As such, I am very excited about the launch of the Reebok Nano X5 Edge, which builds upon everything that makes the line great and improves upon it in several crucial ways.

Working on your fitness

As you might’ve surmised from its name, the Nano X5 Edge is built on the existing Nano X5 platform. That’s a perfect place to start, obviously, but there are some critical upgrades.

For starters, the upper has been retooled. This new take gets an upgraded Flexweave upper that improves the shoe’s overall fit, feel and breathability. Not only is it strong and durable, but now it’s more comfortable during more challenging, longer workouts.

Additionally, the sneaker’s styling has been updated to be bolder and sportier, which doesn’t change its performance, per se, but does give it a more unique and aggressive appearance.

The other significant change is found in the midsole. The Nano X5 Edge has a Dualresponse EVA midsole designed to offer unmatched adaptability.

With a firmer heel, it grants excellent stability when you need to lock in. But the cushioned, responsive forefoot offers athletic control and security during more mobile activities.

Exceptional all-arounder

As mentioned, not everything about this sneaker is brand-spanking-new — and it doesn’t need to be. Some of the original Nano X5’s best features return in this updated, upgraded version, much to the prospective joy of existing fans.

Most crucially, the sneaker retains its decoupled Metasplit outsole. Boasting a 7-millimeter drop, the outsole has a flat, stable base that’s ideal for all kinds of weightlifting. However, it’s also highly flexible, so it’s adept at speedier exercise, as well — yes, even running.

While the outsole is flexible enough for athletic performance, it’s also stable enough for heavy lifting.

Furthermore, to complement the revamped upper, the brand has reintroduced its Performance Comfort Collar, which secures your foot (when the shoes are properly laced) while maintaining a high level of comfort. It hugs your foot without strangling it.

This results in a sneaker that weighs a total of 11.8 ounces. For a solid all-arounder, they’re pretty light. In fact, they’re slightly lighter than the existing Nano X5s.

If you’re in search of perhaps the best all-around fitness shoe, this one is a serious contender.
