One of the most popular brands of the current zeitgeist, Salomon has ascended from little-known French ski brand to streetwear titan in quite the meteoric journey.

In the process, the brand has become no stranger to collaborating with some of the hottest names out there — but its latest team-up with Carhartt WIP reaches a new level of street-meets-trail cred.

Workwear meets trail

The Carhartt WIP x Salomon X-Alp isn’t the co-creation of Carhartt WIP and Salomon; that distinction goes to 2022’s Shelter CSWP hiking boot, which combined Salomon’s technical alpine design with Carhartt WIP’s streetwear aesthetic.

However, the new mountain-inspired X-Alp sneaker is arguably more notable, given the fact that this hiking style is much more approachable for the average outdoor enthusiast compared to alpine-specific styles.

With the help of a little Carhartt WIP-ifying, the X-Alp’s new, workwear inspired look bridges the gap between city and trail, and actually makes the hiking shoe look more badass and capable than ever. The most obvious stylistic update to the X-Alp is the addition of duck camo, which is placed across the collar and tongue.

The tactile upper combines leather panels and synthetic overlays for a dynamic, durable design, while the protective rubber mudguard, which receives a flecked pattern courtesy of Carhartt WIP, maintains the shoe’s trail-ready DNA.

The X-Alp’s capable DNA lives on in the form of the stitched lateral power band and 3D Edging Chassis, which is a proprietary minimal plastic insert between the midsole and outsole that adds stability, underfoot protection and balance on uneven terrain.

The Contagrip outsole, which receives the same flecked treatment as the mudguard, retains its high-traction capabilities.

Finally, the monochromatic black colorway lends some subtlety to the shoe, and masks the co-branding that appears on the pull tabs and insoles.

Availability and pricing

The Carhartt WIP x Salomon X-ALP drops December 18th on both Salomon and Carhartt WIP’s official websites, and will retail for $200.
