Traeger is practically synonymous with pellet grills and smokers. In fact, it could be said that the brand is the bar by which all others are judged. And yet, the brand has one major pain point: it isn’t exactly what you’d call approachable, price-wise.

That might all be about to change, however, as the brand has just introduced its Traeger Westwood grills, which put the brand’s award-winning tech and precision into a much more affordable package.

Better on a budget

Before now, Traeger’s most approachable full-sized grills started at $900, which is no small investment. And its smaller options, which still cost nearly $500, come with a lot of sacrifices. They’re also largely intended for grilling on the go (one is tailgating-friendly, while the other is positively packable).

But the new Westwood grills split the difference, offering generous cooking areas and loads of tech for hundreds of dollars less than their next-closest counterparts. More specifically, they start at $700, which is a significantly more approachable starting point than folks familiar with Traeger are used to.

There are two versions that differ only in size. The standard offers 653 square inches of cooking space, while the XL gets 823.

The new lineup, so far, includes two grills: the standard Westwood and the Westwood XL. The former offers 653 square inches of cooking area, while the latter gets a significant bump up to 823 square inches. Both also have a dual-tier design, so you get a little extra versatility and volume.

However, beyond that, they’re exactly the same. They have the same overall shape, build, materials and feature set. And, honestly, they’re pretty robust all-around.

All griller, no filler

On the right side of both grills, users will find a simple, touch-operated control unit attached to the 18-pound-capacity hopper, which allows for easy set-it-and-forget-it precision temperature control, as well as a built-in timer. They also come with a wired probe, so you can check the internal temperature of whatever you’re cooking with ease.

But Traeger also took it a step further and made them even easier to monitor, even at a distance, by adding its WiFIRE wireless connectivity. That means you can monitor your cook and even adjust it on the fly directly through the Traeger mobile app.

The grills’ control unit also has a flat top for a bit of added workspace, as does the shelf on the other side. Furthermore, there’s storage for your grilling tools and a P.A.L. Rail system for additional modules, offering a bit of customization, as well.

Both grills also have a temperature range of 180 to 450 degrees, meaning you can use them as a typical grill and baking station, or as a smoker for longer, all-day cooks to give your meats that perfect smoky finish.

Now that spring is finally here, Traeger couldn’t have picked a better time for this launch. And maybe it’s a sign of more to come. Only time will tell.
