Crocs has had a pretty wild brand trajectory. Initially co-opted by nurses, kitchen staff and other service workers, the brand eventually made its way into the collective consciousness by way of the fashion industry.

Now a category-spanning footwear staple, most folks probably don’t know how these so-ugly-they’re-cool clogs first came to be. Well, the Crocs Classic Boat Shoe, back with a trio of new editions for 2026, might give you a hint.

If it makes it easier, you can call them “croat shoes.”

All hands on deck

Despite their ascent from humble, albeit comfortable, functional usage to genuine fashion-forward employment, Crocs actually started in a surprising place. They were originally intended to replace classic dock shoes.

Yes, Crocs were initially imagined as a replacement for the classic footwear offered by the likes of Sperry, Sebago and G.H. Bass. And while they sported a wholly different appearance, their details do paint a convincing picture.

For starters, they’re made out of the brand’s proprietary Croslite foam, which is lightweight, sturdy and, most crucially, completely waterproof. Furthermore, those signature perforations (especially the ones toward the outsole) are ideal for drainage when your feet get wet.

They also have a slip-resistant outsole and, typically, have a back strap that allows for both casual slip-on wear and a more secure fit, depending on how you orient it.

Croc rock

It’s worth noting that the Crocs Classic Boat Shoe already existed. Initially launched back in August of 2025, it came in two colorways: Coffee/Cognac and Army Green/Walnut.

For 2026, it is back in three new colorways: Blue Bolt, Bone/Moth and Black/Black. That means there are now five distinct colorways, all of which are outfitted the same.

The Blue Bolt is especially interesting for two reasons. First, it’s easily the most vibrant of all of them. And second, its a stylistic, visual mirror of the shoe’s intended purpose: blue at the base that’s similar to water and brown around the collar that represents the shore.

The base of the shoe is still Croslite foam, and the collar is still vegan PU leather — meaning it’s entirely waterproof and won’t shrink or crack when exposed to moisture (as leather might).
