Stunning New Nike Sneakers Emerge from the Most Unlikely Blend of Ingredients Imaginable

Somehow, a formula that feels almost like Mad Libs translates to surprisingly sweet Southwest-inspired kicks.

Nike + Devin Booker + Sedona, Arizona + McDonald’s = Awesome?

While the latter half of that equation in particular may seem extremely unlikely, it’s true.

The shoe brand, Phoenix Suns All-Star and fast food chain have teamed up on sneakers inspired by the Arizona town’s unique Micky D’s, whose arches are not golden but turquoise.

Defying expectations, the resulting Nike Book 2 “Sedona” kicks look pretty sweet, too.

A tale of two sneakers

The tie-in goes beyond Booker’s decade-plus tenure with the Suns, as the early-blooming shooting guard first appeared on scouts’ radars as a heavily hyped McDonald’s All-American.

Considering he’s made five NBA All-Star teams, won two Olympic gold medals and become the Suns’ all-time leading scorer before the age of 30, it’s safe to say he’s lived up to the hype.

We are not making this up: the famed “Teal Arches” that inspired the Nike Book 2 “Sedona.”
The Cook Family McDonald’s

The shoes are almost as impressive, drawing inspiration from the unique Sedona McDonald’s, itself a cool early ’90s byproduct of local officials insisting that the structure not clash with the red rock landscape.

Let’s start with the General Release colorway, which boasts an ultra-clean “Sand Drift” base hue accented by turquoise “Dusty Cactus” hits on the cuff and outsole.

Note the Sand Drift base color has subtle “cracks” reflecting the dry, broken sand common to the Southwest.

That same color appears on the rubberized Swoosh, the “chapter two” on each pull tab and, yes, the iconic McDonald’s M on the tongue and lateral heel.

(It could be smaller, but it could be bigger, too.)

Compared to the Nike logo, the McDonald’s one is pretty restrained.

As striking as this shoe is, to quote Yoda, there is another.

The much more elusive “Friends & Family” exclusive drapes the entire molded upper and midsole in that same eye-popping turquoise tint, with the white McDonald’s M one of the few contrasting elements.

Don’t be surprised to see the incredibly rare, turquoised-out Friends & Family colorway popping up for high prices on resale sites once the sweepstakes ends.

Though most pairs sold or acquired may never see the blacktop or hardwood, it’s worth noting they are fully capable of balling out.

Performance-driven highlights include a Cushlon 3.0 midsole, forefoot Air Zoom unit and plush foam sock liner, plus a low-cut silhouette suiting the shooting guard’s dynamic on-court style.

Whoever came up with the box concept deserves a hefty raise … or at least a week’s worth of free McValue meals.

I’d be remiss not to mention that the packaging is equally inspired, with every pair packed in a turquoise clamshell mimicking the classic Big Mac vessel, right down to the debossed arches on the lid.

It’s such a fun finishing touch, I can almost forgive collectors for rarely letting their shoes out of the box.

Availability and pricing

You have a chance to score one of just 50 pairs of the Friends & Family style via a sweepstakes on the McDonald’s app (which requires the purchase of a specialty drink) running through May 28.

The General Release colorway will be available via Nike and other sites beginning June 2nd for $155.
