One of Vans’ Most Unconventional Sneakers Gets a Seriously Rugged Outdoor Heritage Update

You’d never expect this classic British dress shoe to be so capable outdoors, but the Off the Wall brand made it work.

Southern California-based footwear and apparel brand Vans is anything but formal. Yet that hasn’t stopped the brand from delving into a shoe style usually associated with finely tailored suits and business dealings.

Of course, it wouldn’t really be a Vans sneaker if it were all stuffed up and foppish. Even considering that, there’s something decidedly unusual about the Vans OTW Authentic Oxford, which combines a typically formal style shoe with heritage materials and a rugged, outdoor-friendly build.

Off the wall, innit?

As the name of the shoe suggests, this is an Oxford — or rather, it’s an interpretation of an Oxford, as the style is typically a much more formal bit of footwear. That said, this version is not the first time Vans has made one.

The brand previously released three canvas versions of this same shoe, including a woodland camo-print version. And that silhouette was actually derived from a Half Cab outdoor boot reimagining from earlier this year.

While this isn’t the first version of the OTW Oxford, it is the first to get a Horween leather upper.

Beyond the overall silhouette of this off-the-wall Oxford (pun intended), there’s another connecting tether between them all: the outsole. This shoe, unlike traditional Oxfords, features a chunky Vibram platform outsole.

But it’s not just thick and tall, it also has a deep, treaded underside, as you’d find on a hiking boot. For those keeping score, yes, that means this sneaker is a lot more capable than you might expect. And yes, it could feasibly go hiking, although it’s probably more suited to streetwear, stylistically speaking.

Heritage with an edge

What sets this particular version of the OTW Authentic Oxford apart is its upper. While the previous editions were crafted with canvas uppers, this one sees that material swapped for an even more classic, heritage option: leather.

But this isn’t just any leather, it’s Horween. Those with a taste for boots and outdoor adventure probably recognize that name, as it is a material made by a Chicago-based outfit of the same name dating back to 1905.

Horween leather is a premium material, beloved for its outstanding durability, rich colors, how magnificently it ages (and acquires a unique patina) and more. And it’s definitely an unusual material for a brand like Vans.

Beyond that, the shoe also gets two pairs of laces (cable and flat), OrthoLite support, a leather footbed and more. Not only is this one of the strangest Vans sneakers, but it’s now also one of the finest.
