Vans’ ‘Grandma’s Couch’ Sneakers Are Way More Rugged and Capable Than They Look

Vans is one of the most iconic Southern California style brands of the last half-century or longer. Most of that is owed to its deep catalog of classic sneakers, and the Old Skool is undoubtedly one of the best and most recognizable (perhaps second only to its Slip-Ons.)

Well, the brand’s latest take maintains that sneaker silhouette, but really alters the vibe with some unique materials, patterns and more. However, the real secret to the Vans OTW Old Skool 36 Vibram is how sneakily rugged and capable it is.

Riveting design

As mentioned, the key elements of this take on the Old Skool remain. It still has the same iconic side stripe, toe cap, reinforced heel and so on. However, the materials used and the smaller details are a pretty major departure.

That starts with the base material. Instead of a classic canvas, these sneakers have a floral jacquard textile boasting the kind of texture and pattern that can only be described as “grandma’s couch chic.”

However, that’s only a part of the story. That upper is reinforced with fine, full-grain leather on the toe cap, heel, eyestays and even the side stripe. The collar lining and is also made from the same leather.

But wait, there’s more! As a kind of finishing touch, the upper has a series of metal rivets that wrap around the whole perimeter, including the toe and heel.

Sneaky superpower

The intricate upper is, perhaps obviously, the most eye-catching element on this sneaker. However, it’s far from the only thing to get excited about.

While that upper is where the shoe’s styling really kicks it up a notch, the outsole is arguably just as significant. That’s because the brand decided to go in a different direction than its standard vulcanized rubber.

In the standard rubber’s place, this sneaker boasts a more rugged, capable and dependable Vibram one. While it still technically has a waffle pattern, it’s a different, more unique interpretation than typical Vans sneakers.

More importantly, however, that rubber swap means these sneakers offer better grip, traction, shock-absorption, durability and slip resistance. They’re not hikers (obvious, I know,) but they’re probably a lot more capable than you might otherwise expect.

But don’t worry, they’re still crazy comfortable, courtesy of a Sola Foam ADC (All-Day Comfort) insole.

Pricing and availability

The Vans OTW Old Skool 36 Vibram will be priced at $160 per pair when it drops tomorrow, November 13, 2025. If it’s a bit too over-the-top for you, there’s another classic black-and-white distressed pair with the same Vibram outsole also launching tomorrow for $145.
