How often do you think about pencils? Well, if you’re a composer, artist or designer — or perhaps all three — the pencil is one of your most important tools. In 1998, the pencil world (yes, there’s a world for that) mourned the end of the “best pencil ever made,” the Blackwing 602 by Eberhard-Faber, used by the likes of Steven Sondheim. California Cedar Products Company has purchased the name rights and released their tribute to the 602, the Palomino Blackwing Pencil. Just like the original, it houses a ferrule eraser, which is rectangular and refillable. As for the pencil itself, it writes extremely well, imparting rich black tones, uncharacteristic of a graphite pencil, so it’s as good for sketching as it is for taking/composing notes. With a near cult following (yes, there’s a cult for that), any remaining Blackwing 602s still sell on eBay for upwards of 40 smackers apiece. Grab yourself a full 12-pack of Palomino Blackwings for way less and look downright old school in all the write ways.

California Cedar was nice enough to send over several beautiful images, which we’ve embedded after the jump.
