Ikea’s New Collection with Virgil Abloh Is Every Bit as Weird as You’d Expect

Expect lots of quotation marks and words in all-caps.

If you or the people you live with like Off-White, you’ll love Ikea Markerad.

A collaborative effort between Ikea and Louis Vuitton men’s collection artistic director and Off-White CEO Vrigil Abloh, the 15-product collection contains tables, bags, toolkits, rugs and a backlit Mona Lisa painting. Ikea says the collection “blends contemporary art culture, street art culture” with its mission to democrative design.

“The ethos of the collection is to add an artful quality to anonymous objects,” Abloh said in a press release. If there’s a single stand-out product, it’s the Markerad Low Pile Rug, which is a roughly 3-foot by 7-foot Ikea receipt to lay in a hallway. “The receipt is a trademark in itself that has been transformed into art. I think that this rug can just as easily be on a floor or hung on a wall — in both scenarios, the rug highlights the entire story which IKEA embodies,” Abloh said in a press release.

The collection is available starting today in US Ikea stores. The brand says quantities are limited and vary store-to-store.
