Darts Is Having a Moment — Rimowa and Winmau Are Betting Big on It

Darts logged a record 51.2 million viewer hours at the PDC World Championship, and Rimowa just made the most expensive bet on that momentum: a grooved-aluminum dartboard cabinet built with Winmau, the Welsh board manufacturer whose Blade X sits at the center of the collaboration.

Why Winmau is the right partner

This isn’t a cosmetic licensing deal. The Classic collection’s construction language — anodized aluminum shell, leather handle — wraps a cabinet that actually functions.

Rimowa, an LVMH maison since 2016, chose Winmau specifically because the brand builds boards used at the professional level — the Blade X is a legitimate piece of playing equipment, not a prop. 

The Winmau Blade X is a tournament-grade bristle board, and its engineering centers on wire deflection. Winmau’s blade wire system is designed to reduce bounce-outs by angling the wire so darts are redirected into the scoring segment rather than deflected away from the board entirely.

The result, according to Winmau, is a more consistent playing surface, whether you’re a casual thrower or someone who actually practices.

The board’s sisal fiber construction also allows it to self-heal — fibers close back around a dart hole after removal, extending the board’s lifespan considerably compared to cheaper alternatives.

The design details that make it a RIMOWA

The cabinet carries the same parallel grooves introduced on Rimowa’s aluminum luggage in 1950 — structural ribbing that doubles as the brand’s most recognizable visual signature.

According to Man of Many, the case opens to reveal the mounted Winmau Blade X board and integrated dart storage. It reads immediately as a Rimowa object, which is the point. Rimowa’s Instagram announcement shows the cabinet closed and wall-mounted — a deliberate signal that it’s meant to belong in a room, not a storeroom.

Part of a pattern, not a one-off

But as random as it might seem, the dartboard case follows a clear trajectory.

Business of Fashion reported that Rimowa’s growth strategy is explicitly functionality-led, and executive commentary has flagged non-luggage accessories as central to that push.

And we’ve already seen this approach play out over the last few years through releases like Rimowa’s grooved-aluminum Vitra Toolbox and the Original Backpack’s category expansion — both examples of the brand applying its aluminum design language beyond travel.

So even if the odds of a ~$6,300 dartboard appearing in most party rooms are slim, its existence is a clear signal of the sport’s evolution, and will matter to at least a small subset of people. This collaboration likely qualifies as one of the most considered versions of a portable dartboard ever.
