As UK historians — and viewers of the documentary Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery — know, 1960s London saw a major post-war revolution in fashion and culture driven by a focus on all things young and hip and modern.

So-called “Swinging London” no doubt influenced motorcycle design, as this same time period saw the emergence of the original British café racers around Ace Cafe London, which thrives to this day.

Honoring that heritage in stunning fashion is Triumph’s latest spin on the Speed Twin 1200, which not only upgrades the bike’s looks but introduces a number of ride-altering tweaks.

Game-changing style

From Honda to Royal Enfield, lots of brands make hay with old-school styling, and with its retro bike bona fides, Triumph has as much right to do so as anyone.

Even so, this particular motorcycle stands out from the pack — and its base model, the Speed Twin 1200 RS — because it amps up not only the aesthetics but the attitude.

Clip-on bars and grippy knee pads encourage you to fully engage with a tucked-in, all-out riding experience.

The difference starts up front, with the introduction of clip-on bars, which encourage the sort of low, tucked posture you must embrace to beat your buddies to the next noshery.

This push toward more aggressive riding is only enhanced by the bike’s streamlined silhouette, highlighted by machined bar-end mirrors, the bullet single seat with removable cowl and the absence of passenger footpegs. (In their place are footpeg finishers, although Triumph does include the actual pegs if you’d like to bring along a pillion.)

Adding to the racer vibes are ribbed clutch and alternator cover badges, black head bolt covers and knee pads for hugging the tank when you’re leaning deep into turns or pinning it to win it.

This bike even has the paint job to match: a British racing-inspired combination of Competition Green and Aluminum Silver, complemented by color-matched silver wheels and a green headlight bowl.

Modern performance

It’s not just window dressing, either, as the motorcycle itself boasts all the contemporary features that make the RS such a hot ticket in the first place.

After all, the high-compression 1,200cc engine makes a teeth-rattling 103.5 horsepower at 7,750 rpm and a lively peak torque of 83 ft-lbs at 4,250rpm to boot.

Taming all those horses are Brembo Stylema front brakes (Nissin rear), while Metzeler Racetec RR K3 tires supply plenty of confidence-boosting traction on the tarmac.

Providing the shock absorption to match are fully adjustable Marzocchi forks (4.72 inches of travel) and Öhlins rear suspension units (4.84 inches of travel).

There’s also something the riders of the ’60s could not even dream of: an integrated color TFT screen offers access to loads of data and three ride modes — Road, Rain and Sport — that adjust engine response to match your atmosphere and attitude.

Meanwhile, the modern magic of Triumph Shift Assist, Optimized Cornering ABS and Traction Control make the ride as smooth and safe as possible, no matter how quickly you simply must get from Blue Bottle to Caribou Coffee.
