This Super-Affordable Retro Street Bike Has No Business Looking This Good

While the heritage of this approachable moto is admittedly convoluted, the throwback aesthetics are refreshingly clean.

“A sentient species of meter-tall furry humanoids native to the Outer Rim desert world of Tatooine.”

Something resembling that Wookiepedia entry is likely what first comes to mind for most of us upon hearing the word “Jawa.”

However, nearly a half-century before those hooded mischief makers appeared in Star Wars, a moto maker bearing the same name emerged halfway across the world in Prague.

Though the bikes now roll out of India (more on that later), a couple of models are extending beyond the subcontinent’s borders, giving me a great excuse to extoll the virtues of one whose streamlined old-school style belies its low price. Meet the Jawa 42 FJ.

Czech this out

So what is Jawa? Born in the capital of what is now the Czech Republic in 1929, the brand gets its name from founder František Janeček and the motorcycle division of German vehicle manufacturer Wanderer, which he had just acquired.

Formed using the first two letters of his last name and that brand name, Jawa evolved into a top motorcycle manufacturer, available in more than 120 countries at its peak in the 1950s.

If the silhouette reminds you of BSA’s Bantam 350, there’s a good reason. That bike’s design was based on the 42 FJ’s.

Though it fell off in the 1990s, the name was revived in 2018 when Indian auto maker Mahindra & Mahindra licensed it, and M&M’s Classic Legends label began resurrecting its classic style.

Two prime examples are the 350 CL and the 42FJ, which share a platform and some big news, which is that, thanks to a partnership with Tendance Roadster, they will be distributed in France.

It’s a small foothold but a promising one, as it portends potential wider availability of the brand, to more of Europe and maybe even the US someday.

That would be sweet because I believe the American market is ripe for bikes like these, particularly the 42 FJ.

Retro-modern marvel

What makes me say that? Well, first off, the styling is super compelling for a motorcycle that will start at the equivalent of just a bit over $5,000 in France.

While the 350 CL is full-on classic, the FJ brings a more contemporary edge to the proceedings, which translates to a sharper and more streamlined look that’s heavier on the matte finishes and lighter on the chrome shine.

At the same time, its big round headlight, mirrors and gauge, plus the teardrop tank, bench seat and twin rear shocks, provide plenty of throwback flair.

The round mirrors, teardrop tank and bench seat are just a few of the 42 FJ’s attractive old-school traits.

Of course, the second big selling point is one that applies to so many bikes emerging from India and Asia, which is that this bike is eminently approachable.

The 334cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder produces roughly 23 horsepower and a peak torque of about 21 ft-lbs.

These thoroughly unintimidating numbers are nonetheless perfectly qualified to dart through urban gridlock and blissfully zip down rural roads, shifting through the six-speed transmission and savoring the engine’s rumble as the wind rushes past.

This photo is no gimmick — Jawa’s standard keys really are perfectly tank-shaped.

A couple of other specs add to the bike’s beginner-friendly nature: a weight of 406 pounds and a seat height of 31.1 inches.

Together with ABS, they should help make each time out safer and more confidence-inspiring than the last.

Oh, and for the record, the FJ is short for František Janeček, a fitting nod to the man with a plan nearly a century ago.

Availability and pricing

Long available in India, the Jawa 42 FJ is headed to France at a starting price of €4,990, or about $5,350.

The brand’s long-awaited return to Europe augurs well for a future appearance on our shores, fingers crossed.
