When it comes to motorcycles, perhaps the most elusive combination is good looks, reliable performance and wallet-friendly price.

So when you do find something that checks all three boxes, especially from a trusted brand, it’s hard not to shout it from the mountaintops.

My own personal mountaintop is a fifth-floor NYC apartment, and my shout of the day easily goes to Triumph’s new Tracker 400.

The bike somehow boasts all those qualities and even throws rider-friendliness into the mix for good measure.

Track star

True to its name, the Tracker 400 proudly wears its flat track-inspired heritage on its sleeve number plate, but the dirt-born styling is not limited to that unmissable element.

The aesthetic is also present in the wide bars, wind-splitting fly screen and 3.4-gallon tank, which features bold-face Tracker branding, sculpted knee cut-outs and a color-matched counterpart in the seat cowl at the rear.

Quite literally rounding out the retro look are the tank cap, mirrors, classic LED headlight and jauntily angled twin exhaust pipes.

As throwback as the look is, the Tracker’s performance is wholly contemporary, beginning with the class-leading 398cc liquid-cooled single cylinder engine, tuned up to boost peak power to 41.4 horsepower at 9,000 RPM and 27.7 ft-lbs of torque at 7,500 rpm.

The Tracker 400 notably sneaks in rider-friendly tech that does not interrupt its sweet, streamlined style.

In addition to the lively ride-by-wire throttle response, the power plant offers 80 percent of its peak torque beginning at 3,000 rpm, meaning plenty of punch throughout the six-speed gearbox, no matter the situation.

Accordingly, the dual-spoke wheels get wrapped in rugged dual-purpose Pirelli MT60 RS tires, the better to grip and rip any surface you tackle (within reason).

Easy rider

While the wide bars and set back footpegs encourage an upright, elbows out, sporty riding position, it should be noted that the total package is ultimately quite rider-friendly.

That quality owes largely to some of its dimensions, including a seat height of 31.7 inches, wheelbase of 53.5 inches and curb weight of 381.4 pounds, which together ensure the bike is relatively nimble and easy to handle, even for newer riders.

The bike is available in three winning paint schemes — Phantom Black (higher up on page), Aluminum Silver Gloss (above) and Racing Yellow (bottom of page).

Quietly complementing those elements is advanced rider technology, including torque-assist clutch, switchable traction control and ABS.

Smoothing out the bumps, meanwhile, are upside-down big piston forks offering 5.5 inches of travel and a rear gas monoshock with 5.1 inches of travel and preload adjustment for two-up riding.

Keeping key data accessible at a glance is the single-dial analog speedo, neatly fused with a digital tach display.

These elements perfectly align with the overall thesis of the bike, which is that modern performance does not need to interfere with timeless old-school style.
