The Royal Enfield Himalayan hit the market a decade ago, and it’s become a standout in the adventure bike segment throughout that time.

Of course, that’s not without good reason. Between some eye-catching retro style, an accessible platform and an affordable price point, Royal Enfield’s offering ticks a lot of boxes.

The Phantom doesn’t look all that dissimilar to a stock Himalayan, but it abounds with off-road-ready upgrades.

However, just because the Himalayan 450 is a budget-friendly, small-bore ADV, doesn’t mean it’s only geared towards beginners. On the contrary, as you’ll see in the case of this rally-prepped version, the bike can be made to have some real deal off-road chops.

Dressed for success

It’s dubbed the Phantom, and it’s an upgrade package that comes courtesy of UK-based Royal Enfield dealership Cooperb Motorcycles, as reported by MCN.

While this means that it’s not an option available to stateside readers, it should nevertheless provide plenty of build inspo. From tip to tail, the team has reworked the Himalayan to make the bike even more capable away from the pavement.

Accordingly, as part of the basic Phantom equipment package, Cooperb outfits the Royal Enfield ADV with added protection for both the rider and the bike. Beyond some Acerbis handguards, you’ll find a set of Acerbis upper fork guards, a chain guide and a skid plate, as well as some engine cases and radiator mesh.

The Acerbis handguards are an important addition if you’ll be hitting the trails, even if you’re not racing bar to bar with other riders.

The changes aren’t just to make the Himalayan look the part, either. Cooperb also includes a larger 23-liter Acerbis tank (up from 17 liters) for increased range.

Moreover, the Phantom package heralds a few key changes to the touchpoints. Added bar risers provide a more upright riding position, while pivot pegs and a rally seat help the rider to stay atop the bike in the air or through the rough.

The sum of small details

While Cooperb’s various Acerbis goodies make for the most visually evident tweaks to the Himalayan, they’re far from the extent of what goes into the Phantom package.

Take a closer look, and you’ll find plenty of other choice upgrades. For instance, the 452cc Sherpa single-cylinder engine benefits from a DNA Combo Induction Kit, a Fuel X Pro Plus fuel programmer as well as a full HP Corse exhaust system.

That’s not all. In keeping with the package’s rally inspirations, the Phantom brings markedly improved suspension: a Hagon custom rear shock comes standard, and Cooperb also offers the option of a K-Tech ProValve kit up front for the forks.

Top it off with thoughtful decisions like mudguard deletions and hose re-routes, as well as optional extras like lightweight SM Pro rims, an 18-inch rear wheel and knobby off-road rubber, and the Himalayan’s added potential speaks for itself.

In any event, if you’re wondering whether or not these upgrades work, it’s safe to say that Cooperb has put the Phantom through its paces.

As MCN reports, the dealer fielded three 450s earlier this year in the January Valleys X-Treme Lite race in South Wales. While there, it managed a Big Bike Single class win.

Availability and pricing

Cooperb is located in the UK, and the outfit offers delivery throughout England and Wales. If you’re interested in a Phantom, complete bikes are available starting at £10,299 (~$13,900).

While this means the package comes in a good bit more than a stock Himayan, it’s a convenient and comprehensive way to give Royal Enfield’s beginner-friendly ADV rally-ready chops.
