As inextricably linked as the Gixxer and Hayabusa may be with Suzuki, another of the 74-year-old Japanese brand’s standout bikes boasts even more history.

That’s the Katana, which hit the market way back in 1981 and enjoyed an epic 25-year run before popping up again in recent years.

More surprising is the fact that the bike’s distinctive look actually came from, well, three German dudes.

Perhaps it is fitting then that a snazzy new treatment, the Katana Limited Edition, is exclusive to Deutschland.

Right on, Target

Just to quickly recap the origin story, Suzuki contracted Target Design to give the bike a striking contemporary look.

Led by Hans Muth, former head of styling for BMW, the three-man team drew up a concept that set the template for Suzuki for years to come.

The V-shaped tank, wide in front and narrowing toward the rider, is an oft-emulated element of the Katana design.

True to its name, the Katana’s silhouette was sharp and streamlined, highlighted by a unique V-shaped tank, wind-splitting nose, silver hue and, on the side panel, a small graphic treatment: the Japanese character for the katana sword, pierced by an actual katana.

While the bike has taken many forms since, the new edition uniquely honors that history with several pointed aesthetic updates, a couple of commemorative goodies and one big performance upgrade.

As this release is limited to 45 examples for the German market, each bike gets a numbered sticker, plus a black-and-silver decal kit, blacked-out rear fairing, carbon-like tank pad and frame sliders.

The extras are a Katana-themed garage mat and a Katana History, a book documenting more than four decades of evolution.

Cutting-edge components

The big functional addition is not inconsiderable: a Katana-specific Akrapovič slip-on system that imbues the bike with, Suzuki says, “the sound of a drawn blade.”

For their part, they back that claim up with a button you can click on the product page to hear the bike start up and tick through the gears, which damn near gave me goosebumps.

The Akrapovič is the standout feature of the new edition, enabling the 999cc engine to unsheathe with awe-inspiring fanfare. Resting on the seat in this photo is the Katana history book that comes with every purchase.

Other components are very much the same as what you’d find on the standard Katana, which is not a bad thing.

That means it boasts the same 999cc inline-four engine derived from the Suzuki GSX‑R1000 and tuned to max out the mid range, making 152 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and peak torque of 78 ft-lbs at 9,250 rpm, good for a top speed over 124 mph.

Handling is as reliable as can be thanks to an aluminum frame outfitted with KYB suspension and the stopping power of Brembo brakes with radially mounted calipers.

Full LED lighting is very much welcome from both a style and safety standpoint.

Modern rider-friendly conveniences include ride-by-wire throttle, three ride modes, five levels of the brand’s own traction control and a bidirectional quickshifter.

That tech is accessed via an LCD dash, complemented by LED indicator displays and full LED lighting, ensuring you can see and be seen every time you saddle up this burnished blade of a bike.

Availability and pricing

Limited to 45 bikes and exclusive to German dealers, the Suzuki Katana Limited Edition starts at €15,045, roughly $17,400 USD.

Suzuki Katana Limited Edition

With just 45 units being released to the German market, this 999cc collector’s bike boasts a numbered sticker, black-and-silver decal kit, blacked-out rear fairing, carbon-like tank pad and frame sliders, plus a Katana-themed garage mat and a copy of Katana History, a book documenting more than four decades of evolution. Still the most notable upgrade is much more adrenalized: a Katana-specific Akrapovič slip-on system that imbues the bike with, Suzuki says, “the sound of a drawn blade.”
